THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D. C. “ 6 TUESDAY, JULY 16, 1889. THE EMBRYO STATES. Universal Suffrage in Montana—Wash- ington and South Dakota Conventions. On the reassembling of the constitutional convention of Montana at Helena yesterday, after a recess since last Friday the matter of universal suffrage was sprung by the introduc- tion py Joy, by request, of a petition signed by 150 citizens from eight or ten small towns in various parts of the territory, asking that consideration be taken of the question. It was referred to the suffrage committee, where it may slumber. There were no prominent names attached to it. During the absence of the members at Great Falls, at the reception, small printed circulars headed “Universal 8: e,” reasons why women should vote, were d on every member's desk, sticking so closely that they could not be scratched off, and in every spot about the convention hal! where a conspicuous spacecouldbe found. I can’t undertake to give here the scheme designed to work out the ideal of Washington, of a meeting of the best youth of the country for certain influences of a common university life at the capital, but I think I can give some idea which will at least check such absurd objections as that of Prof. Brush, of Yale. “Let me suppose that Profs. Brush, Brewer and Verrill, of the Yale scientific school, are | HE PLAYED IN GREAT LUCK. Millionaire Reschler Wins $35,000 at Long Branch. a From the New York World. Lone Braxcu, July 14.—Millionaire “Jim” Reschler, a well known-western man, who was ® partner of ex-Senator Tabor in the Little Pittsburg, won $35,000 at faro last night in the Pennsylvania club house and he will start for the west in the morning with a check for that amount in his pocket. He played from 5 o'clock in the evening until 5 in the morning. His luck was extraordinary from the beginning. Reschler came to Long Branch early. last week to see an old friend who lives on Rumson Road. Early yesterday afternoon he dropped into John Daly's Long Branch club. He did not intend to play. but after looking around he bonght a few checks at the faro table. He finally lost about $700 and ped.
