THE OHIO CONVENTION. Buckeye Republicans Meet to Nominate State Officers. When the Ohio republican state convention assembled in the Metropolitan opera-house, in Columbus, yesterday afternoon, there were 823 delegates present and over 1,000 spectators. Hon. W. C. Cooper, the temporary chairman, made an address, touching upon the tariff, pensions and civil service reform, as well as matters of state interest. The mention of Gov- ernor Foraker’s name called forth an expres- sion of the convention that indicated the senti- ment of the delegates on the probable nominee for governor. At the close of Mr. Cooper's address there was a universal call for Mr. McKinley, but that gentleman did not respond, te the convention resumed business, The committee on oalias and the state central committee were then announced, and then the resolutions, offered by O. 8, Brumn- back, of Toledo, in reference to the death of Mrs, Hayes, expressing regret and condolence and eulogizing the deceased, were adopted by e analy yote. The convention then adjourned “the tat interest in the work of the convention centers, of course, in the nomination for gov- ernor. Ben Butterworth is reported to have said last night if Foraker was nominated he would go to Dakota daring the campaign. A TEXAS POLITICAL FEUD. Gov. Ross Compelled to Send Troops to Wharton. The killing of Red Gibson ‘at Wharton, Tex., last Saturday by Kyle Terry has stirred up bad blood in Wharton and the adjoining county (Fort Bend), and there are grave fears that the | opposing factions will clash and much blood be shed. The governor Monday night received a telegram from Sheriff Garvey, saying: “I am unable to enforce the law without a conflict of arms, and ask assistance from the state to | disarm the community and enforce obedience to the law.” County Judge C. M. Weston wrote as follows: “Under the present state of affairs in this county it becomes my duty to officially notify your excellency that officers of the county are powerless to enforce the law. It is impossible to disarm the community and the pablie peace and safety of the county demand that it be done by some other power.” The governor received the following tele- ‘am from Sheriff Jones: ‘Kyle Terry killed Gibson here last Saturday. Examining trial will be on the 26th. A mob 1s seriously threatened and the prisoner's life is in danger. Force at hand very inadequate to uphold the law. Please order Victoria Rifles here to-mor- row to assist me in maintaining peace during the trial.” In compliance with the above the governor has ordered the Victoria Rifles to Wharton and Capt. Jones’ Grangers to Richmond. The feud is & political one, but is not confined to repub- lieans on one side and democrats on the other, but a mixture of democrats and republicans being on each side. Terry, who killed Gibson, is a son of Col. Terry, of the famous Terry Rangers, and has a strong following. Gibson Was & prominent man aud had scores of friends. CARDINAL GIBBONS ON IRELAND. He Thinks the Treatment of Political Prisoners Unnecessarily Severe. Some time ago the editor of the Dublin, Ire- land, Freeman's Journal sent a request to a number of prominent men in the United States and Canada asking them for an opinion on the treatment political prisoners had received i Ireland during the past three years. Among the answers was the following from Cardinal Gibbons: “As far as my opportunities enable me to judge, it is the general sentiment of our thoughtful American people that the treatment of political prisoners in Ireland has been ex- ceedingly harsh and wantorly severe, and in that view I am compelled toconcur. But I hope that this subject is but a passing episode to be soon forgotten or at least condoned in view of the blessing of home rule and th privilege of autonomy in domestic affairs which is within your grasp. I trust that the friendiy relations between England and Ireland will increase every day and that the tong, un- natural and disastrous conilict will give place to an honorable emulation in the field of com- merce and industry, such as happily exists among th states oft our federal union.” NOTES. The fine old church of C of Chilver’s Coton, Wor- cestershire, England, the original of Sheper- ton. in George Eliot's “Scenes of Clerical Life,” is to be thoroughly restored. The gold medal of the Linnean society was awarded this year to Prof. de Candolle, the eminent botanist. Lord Zetland will assume office as lord-lieu- tenant of Ireland about the middle of July. ‘The committd® of the chamber of deputies having the matter in char; ge has approved the canal com- pak for the relief of the tas Salisbury has been invited to preside at a meeting of liberal unionists to be held in Dublin shortly. General Hastings’ Almost Herculean Task at Johnstown Nearly Completed. Several bodies were recovered at Johnstown yesterday. The work of blasting continued in- cessantly all day, buton account of a heavy rain work in the rubbish was suspended. Col. Hill, Col. Spangler and Gen, Hastings attended @ meeting of the Johnstown citizens held for the purpose of consulting in regard to the clos- ing up of the work in the region. Gen. Hast- ings stated that the state work had so far pro- gressed that he estimated the cleaning up of the debris in the Conemaugh above the stone bridge would be completed by the end of the week and that the work of cleaning up the streets and thoroughfares in Johnstown and neighboring boroughs, with the present force, would probably be completed within the next ten days, The work of cleaning out cellars under such houses as had been condemned by the board of health asa sanitary precaution would also be completed within the same period, and that at the end of that time there would remain of ne- cessity a very considerable amount of work to be done, but it would be mostly on private property. He stated further that the commis- sary department is at present supplying Lai visions to —s 25,000 people, there ig two large supply depots and eleven distributing commissaries. Colonel Spangler stated that that there were now ‘actual wages 2,300 men. Tt was recommended that all heads of fami- lies and single men earning wages should be discharged from relief in the line of food, clothing and supplies, and that the commissary stations be reduced to three or four in number and placed in the hands of Captain Henry H. Koon, of Johnstown, who has beea assisting the | department since the flood, Gen, Hastings said that the temporary store- | rooms, now being erected on Park square, were fully under way and would be completed within ten days; also that the bridge across the Cone- maugh near the railroad would be completed | to-day, and that the other three bridges would in all’ probability be completed this week. It was recommended that on Saturday next the military force be reduced to 150 men. After the interview with the committee a citi- zens’ meeting was held later in the afternoon, at which the following resolution was adopted: Resolved, That the time has arrived, 4 the judgment ‘of the committee, to reduce eg Og ent distribution of supplies, and that Gen. Hastings be requested to taxe such measures to effect this as may seem best, and that we, the committee, approve the consolidation of the existing commissaries and pisting these in the charge of Capt. Koon, with such assistants aa may be necessary. REVOLT AGAINST THE CHEAP HOUSES, Johnstown people are in open revolt against the Pittsburg committee's $100 houses and they won't have them. No one of the residents thus far heard from will take one of them. The fact is the houses were never intended for family occupancy, but were constructed for fishing and bunting parties in the summer season. One of the houses was put up near the Baltimore and Ohio depot. It is a shed-like affair of drab color and has about as many points of architec- tural beauty about it as the coal-house behind a country school-house. It is simply a shell 10 feet by 16 feet, partitionless, chimneyless, lin- ingles, ceilingless; in fact, it is only a carica~ ture. It is not as warm asan “A” tent, and not half as roomy, and still it is the kind of a build- ing in which the Pittsburg relief committee proposes to domicile the families of the house- jess sufferers of the devastated valley. Gen. Hastings heard the first thurmurs of discontent with respectfal incredulity, but as | soon as he saw the shell he was just as indig- nant as any of the kickers, and at the mecting yesterday afternoon took occasion to express himself in the strongest terms. He told the Citizens’ committee that the houses were ir no sense what he expected them to be or what they had been Sie uae to him, and he ly employed earning would not insist that they occupy them. He told them that he would do all in his power to remedy their troubles, and if possible get them substantial builJings. He said he told the | commission when it was here a few days ago | that ter Carpenter =~ would build four-roomed two-story buildings for the same -y. and larger ones in proportion, of hem- k. These, Gen. Hastings said, would be durable and comfortable, and would last the occupants till they should be able to build their own houses again, be that six months or three years hence. SULLIVAN'S * TRAL ‘G CAR. How he will Travel to the Battle Ground Near New Orleans. ‘New York Special to Baltimore American. When Jobn L. Sullivan starts for New Orleans, near which point he is to be beaten by Jake Kilrain or to defeat him, he will not stop training. In fact he will train all the way to the Crescent city, letting up, of course, a day before the fight. His private car will be fitted up with bath, dumb bells, clubs, and all of the paraphernalia requisite to training. The big one will devote most of his attention while traveling to the bag, which he will punch indus- triously as the express train takes him through the southern fields. The trip will not be 4 hurried one, Sullivan will have a night in Cin- cinnati, and another in Montgomery, Ala., and wiil getinto the southern climate by degrees. It is the climate which the Sullivan party fear most. John hasbeen up in a high mountain breathing the dryesé¢ and purest sort of air for weeks, and it is feared that the change from such temperature to the feverish heat of the Louisiana sun will upset the pugilist's constitution. Kilrain's advantage in this respect is noted in pass- in, He has been in a warmer climate than Sullivan, and the change will not be so keenly felt by Jake. Sullivan's fietistions 2 to bie chances of winning are thus summarized by th fighter himself: “I shall win, barring accidents.” The latter phrase covers lots of ground, and to judge from the betting, mon- ied men think that the chances of accidents are as 50 to 100. The men are considered about evenly matched. The chances that Jobn L. is not condition and cannot be SS in condition, offset the supposed superiority of the Bostonian’s blow asa settler. No odds are reported as offered against either man, and few bets have been made public. It quite certain now that Sullivan means bu: ness. He had heard so much about Kilrain being in the ad best condition that he is strictly attending to his work. The general opinion among the ting men here is that if Sullivan fails to drive a winning blow home in the first few rounds he will be out of it. Kilrain will out-wind him, and finally defeat him. | Sulivan is counting on landing that decisive blow at an early stage of the battle. prsnen PN Vee The West Virginia Contest. A Charleston, W. Va., special to the Baiti- more Sun says: The gubernatorial contest com- mittee, now in session in Grafton, finished the reading of the Brooke county depositions, and of about 200 votes challenged by Goff5 were thrown out.
