Severe Thunder Storm—Lost at Johns- town—Religious and Educational Notes. Correspondence of Te EvENtwo Stan: Faeperick, Mp., June 17. The storm which came from the soathwest and broke over this county, between 1 and 2 o'clock p. m. Saturday, was the fiercest electri- cal storm that has passed over here for many years. The rain came in such torrents as to flood the streets of the city from pavement to pavement, the lightning was blinding, and the thunder terrific. Balls of fire were seen to fall in the street in various parts of the city, trees and telegraph poles were knocked down by the lightning, a portion of the wood-work at the P. B.R. station here was set on fire, and a rail on the line of the Baltimore and Ohio, quarter ofa mile this side of Frederick junction, was struck and completely carbonized by the electricity, and it subsequently broke and the engine and the baggage car of a spe- cial train were thrown from the tr: and down a ten-foot eunbankment. The wreck was not cleared away until noon yesterday. There Were no passengers on the train, and the crew escaped injury. In the country the storm was severe on the growing crops, anda number of prominent farmers, who have been inter- viewed, state that the wheat has been damaged at least 25 per cent. It has been injured very much by the “seab,” due to intervals of rainy and hot weather. In spite of the gloomy out- look many of the farmers are buying large quantities of new farming machinery, and the agricultural implement dealers of this city state that the present season so far has been the busiest for some years past. THE FLAG. Friday last the centennial anniversary of the adoption of the American flag was celebrated by one lone patriot in Frederick, whose rever- ence for the memory of Francis Scott Key, whose bones are buried in Mount Olivet ceme- tery here, led him to bring out the only flag he had early in the day and wave it faithfully until evening came. This man was Alexander Woodward, an old resident of Frederick. PERSONAL. Frank Cong. a well-known resident of the county, living aear Jefferson, was stricken with paralysis one day last week, and is in a serious condition ——Wm. Gettysburg, Pa.—Jacob B. Tyson, of Lynch lodge, A. F. and A. M., has been pre- sented with « handsome master Masonic jewel. —One of the brightest so events of the season was a party held at the residence on north Market street of Joseph F. Eisenhauer, president of the board of aldermen, Friday evening last, in honor of the birthday of his daughter, Miss Naunie. RELIEF OF FLOOD SUFFERERS. The active work early maugurated by the people of Frederick for the relief of the Maryland flood sufferers goes on without abatement. Messrs, Johu C. Hardt and Geo. E. Meyer, the local relief committee, on Sat- urday received an urgent appeal for ‘aid from Sleepy Creek, W. Va.. and have sent there money and a lot of supplies. S. M. Hood, for- merly of this county and now of Sleepy Creek, lost all he had. In the Presbyterian church here and the rmed church at Middletown yeeterday handsome collections were taken up for the flood sufferers at Johnstown. Over $200 has been raised for the relief committee by means of festivals and entertainments held in various parts of the county. A neat little sum was raised by the Frederick city ¥. M.C.A. LOST AT JOHNSTOWN. Andrew Barues, of this city, has gone to Jobustown in quest of his wife, who was there at the time of the flood and was supposed to have been lost. Reynold and Emma Roland and Miss Helen Eichelberger, all formerly of this county, were at Johnstown. Miss Eichel- berger bas been heard from and is safe, but the Rolands were both lost. ELECTION OF OFFICERS, A meeting of the stockholders of the Fred- erick City and Catoctin Mountain Turnpike company was held here Saturday, when the following officers and directors were elected: Directors—Wm. RELIGIOUS AND EDUCATIONAT. Services appropriate to children’s day were held yesterday in the United Brethren church, this city; the M. E. church, Mt. Caramel: the M. E. church, Jefferson, and the M. P. church at Walkersville. all in this county The annual examination of the pupils of the Maryland institute for the deaf and dumb, South Market street, closed Saturday. The school will close for the season on Wednesday next. when the pupils, over one hundred in number, will leave for their homes in various parts of the country. The first number of the Association Herald, a monthly four-page journal published in the in- terest of the Frederick City Young Men's Christian Association, made its appearance on Saturday. The editors are Newell A. Wood and Marion 38. Uime. MISCELLANEOUS. Wm. Hanner and Alexander Weaver, both highly respected residents of Middletown, this county, died last week, aged respectively fifty- nine and seventy-six years. Both men left families. - Mayor Lewis H. Doll has issued his periodi- cal manifesto in regard to the law governing dogs in the streets of the city during the sum- mer months, After the Ist of July they will not be allowed to roam the streets unless prop- erly muzzled. Magistrate Worthington Johnson on Satur- day was called upon to hear the case of Lu- einda Burkhardt, Wm. Burkhardt, of Jeffer- son, and O. P. Coblenty, of Middletown, this county, who are ail believed to be more or less implicated in an abortion, of which Lucinda was the chief aggressor. Owing tothe absence of important witnesses the case of the tw Burkhardt's was continued. Coblenty was ac- quitted. County Constable Kranty effected the arrestof the parties named. The Frederick County Agricultural society bas become a member of the Maryland and Delaware Trotting circuit and will give $4,000 toward the premium fund. The object of the circuit is to increase the interest in the races at the county fairs by securing a better class of horses and offering larger premiums. Hanson Stull on Saturday bought of Wm. M. Stockman a tract of 1634 acres of land near Yellow Springs, this county, for which he paid $1,250. At the same time Harvey RB. Lease, auctioneer, sold to Geo. A.
