THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, A CASE or = BIG DRUNK. What Hon. R. C. ©. Dunn Says — Indian Troubles. Sr. Pact, Mixx., June 17.—Hon. Robert C. Dunn telegraphs from Mille Lacs county that the reports of Indian troubles there have been greatly exaggerated, and that it is simply ‘ case of a big drunk on the part of the Indians. Only one man, Magnusen, has been shot, and the county authorities are able to quell the turbances without aid. ie SWINDLING THE FARMERS. A Railroad Accused of Using False Weights and Stealing Grain. Catcaoo, June 17.—A special to the Herald from New Carlisle, Ind., says: The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad, or a certain set of its officials, seem to have beeu, for a long time, engaged in systematic and deliberate robbery of the toiling farmers. By the free use of false weights they have been regularly swindling the grain dealers all along the line of their road. At thia station, and apparently atevery other one on the line, the surplus grain out of which they have swindled the farmer accumulates in the warehouses, and once a year the houses are cleaned ont and this surplus it shipped to Toledo. Sometimes it amounts to nearly a carload. ad Who gets this grain or the money for it isa question which the road will now have to an- ewer before the interstate commission. It is not believed that the higher officials of the Toad are actually aware of what does become ofthis grain, but the indications certainly int to « guilty knowledge on the part of cer- G officers of the grain department. prerelease WORK OF A COAL OIL LAMP. It Causes a Blaze Covering an Area of Fifteen Acres. Moytaeat, June 17.—Last night the upset- ding of @ coal oil lamp caused a blaze covering an area of 15 acres belonging to the Bushel oil refinery at Mile Eud. The works ure situa- ted alongside of the Canadian Pacific railroad track, and a large number of freight cars were soon burned. Surrounding the works are many small ponds into which the biazing oil ran and formed a number of lakes of tire. Had not the spread of the fire been stopped in a certain direction fully two miles of track, together with the Canadi n Pacific station and other build- ings, would have been destroyed. One fire is blazing. The loss will probably reach 000. > SITTING BULL BETTER. He is Violently Opposed to Opening the Reservation. Cuicaco, June 17.—A dispatch from Bis- marck, Dak., says: Couriers who arrived yes- terday from Standing Rock report Sitting Bull, the notorious Sioux chief. as alive and slowly growing stronger. In an interview with regard to the proposed opening of the reservation for settlement he said he never signed a treaty and never would. He is as bitterly opposed to the opening of the reservation as he was a year 2. om Vhen told of the number of Indians at the lower agencies who were signing he would not believe it. He said he had Indians atthe lower conference who reported to him and he knew that no such number as reported had signed. He is cunning and suspicious, and thinks the commissioners are giving out the reports to in- fluence the Indians at the upper agencies. There isevery reason to believe that the commissioners will succeed in opening the res- ervation, but they must do it without the aid or consent of Sitting Bull and his friends. When asked if be thought he would die Sitting Bull said at first he felt that he must go. as the trouble was with his heart, which felt as though he had been shot. He now has some hope of recovery. The Indians at Standing Rock have chosen the orators to represent them at the coming conference. but Sitting Bull w not of the chosen. Those elected are Gall, John Grass, Mad Bear, Big Head and Eagle-that- Scares. —o— An Army Officer Attempts Suicide, Newrort, R. L, June 17.—Major J. W. Major Roder has been very despondent recently on account of ill-bealth. ———._—_ Terrific Gale in West Virginia. Marrtinspcro, West Va, June 17.—A very beavy storm passed over the southwest part of Berkeley county last evening. A terrific gale of wind that did great damage was followed by aterrible thunder storm. This was followed by a heavy bai. storm that added greatly to the destructiveness. The hail-stones lay in some places 3 or 4 inches deep. Crops and trees are ruined. Live stock was badly bruised and in some instances killed. Several houses and barns were wrecked by the wind. No loss of life has yet been reported. Owing to the late- ness of the hour at which the storm occurred details are meagre. ee eee Arrested for Murdering His Brother. The Manual Training Exhibition— Closing Days in the Schools. The manual-training school at 624 O street, which is connected with the High school, was visited by the public to-day. It was the annual exhibition day of the school, and the parents and friends of the High school pupils were enabled to see what had been done in the line of wrod and metal-working. The exhibits were arranged so that they could be easily inspected, and embraced a variety of specimens, showing the progress of the pupils in carpentry and metalwork. The latter, perhaps, had a more novel interest for a majority of the visitors. There were various specimens of iron work in lathe turning, and then work finished with chipping tools, files, and chisels. All this work was done from plans designed by the pupils, and blue prints of the plans formed a part of the exhibit, Itwas remarked that the ma- jority of the specimens were of a useful cher- acter, A HIGHER GRADE OF WORK rg was seen than is usually found in an exhibition eninn teri, ea A of this kind, A GIRL CARPENTER. The parents and friends of the pupils have been in- vited to visit the school-rooms to-morrow and examine the specimens of the skill of the pupils in penmanship, drawing, composition, wood work, &c, Itis likely that thousands will ac- cept the invitation, and the teachers’ reception | day, a8 it is termed, will become one of the popular events in the school year. in Weduesday the closing exercises in all the schools will be held, and on Thursday even- ing the graduating exercises of the High school will be held at the National theater.
