SOCIAL MATTERS. The Summer Outings of Prominent People—Personal Notes. The Japanese minister has taken a summer residence in Mt. Pleasant, between the 14th- street road extended and the Soldiers’ home, and with Madame Mutsu and his daughter will S out there next week. He prefers staying in the neighborhood for the next two months order to superintend the completion the extension he is building to the legation. The improvement consists of a beautiful ball- room with offices and Gea ae chambers over- head. The minister has lately received from Tokio ~— photographs of their imperial high- nesses, the emperor and empress of Japan. The emperor is in a handsome uniform made in the ral European style, but the empress wears the national drees of Japan. The pictures are framed and adorn the walls of the second -room of the legation. Hiro Kichi ¢ oldest son of the minister, who is at university in Cambridge, England, will arrive in this city during’ the latter part of June to spend the summer with his ents. He will accompany the minister and isdeme Maton in Angust n a projected northern tour that will inetode. visits to Sara- jiagara Falls, and Canada. The drawing-room furniture in the Highland terrace house is owned by Mrs. Hearst, so that the improved house and its new ee are already provided with handsome Mrs, Hearst will leave the city some time in the next ten days and make a visit to Mrs. Anthony in Fair Haven, ‘Mass., and she sails from New York on the 26th. She will go direct to London, and from there to Beyreuth, where she will hear the Wagner con- certs, beginning on the 2ist of July. From that point she will go to Russia, where she will be joined by Mrs. Kincaid, of San Francisco, who will travel with her in Russia and Den- mark, visiting Copenhagen and some places in , and spending a few weeks in Paris, then home in October. Mrs. Hearst will go out to San Francisco, returning here in December, when the house willbe ready for its occupants. Senator Hearst has recovered from the fever he had in Mexico, and is now with his son in San Francisco. He will join Mrs. Hearst in New York this month and see her sail, and then re- turn west to his mines. Miss Ada Butterfield, who has been with Mrs. Hearst bere for the past three winters, will join Justice Field's party that starts for the west on the 13th, and return to San Francisco. Miss Christine Barreda, who has been here for’some weeks, will join her mother in New York city next week. Miss Moore, who made so many friends and admirers here last winter when the guest of Senator and Mrs. Hearst, is with her parents at their romantic home on the Alameda, near San Jose, Cal. Mrs. Hearst gave a box party to a number of ladies last evening at Albaugh’s. The guests Were Miss Snell and Miss Waters, of California; Miss Crockett, Miss Christine Barreda, and Miss Butterfield. Miss Marwedell, a prominent California edn- cator, is in the city. She has recently returned from Europe and has been for some time in Boston. Her special department is the intro- duction and improvement of the manual educa- tion system in the public schools. Mrs. Thos. Palmer, who has spent the past month in Detroit, has sailed to join her hus- band at his diplomatic post in Madrid. With two such accomplished ladies as Mrs. Palmer | and Mrs. Loring leading the diplomatic circles in the two capitals of the Iberian peninsula Washington society will be creditably repre- sented. Gen. and Mrs. Anson G. McCook will spend the greater portion of the summer in their de- lightful home on Massachusetts avenue, expect- ing to go on a trip northward in September. Commodore and Mrs. Harmony are in the city superiutending some important improve- ments upon their house. The residents in the city have found the weather of the past week most agreeable for driving, coaching and horseback exercise. The President drives his bay horse John in his road buggy every afternoon. The air has been as fresh as a sea breeze all the week, flapping the awnings as if they were attached to a Queen Anne cottage on the coast. Mrs. Hutchinson, of Massachusetts avenue, will leave the city the latter part of this mouth for her farm in Montgomery county. Mrs. Starring is spending the week quietly’at her house in Highland terrace. mrourning for the recent death of her mother, Mrs. Cronine, in Baltimore. Senator and Mrs. Vance are in their mount- ain home at Asheville, N.C. Mrs. Vance is in mourning for the loss by death of her mother a short time ago. Senator Vance is recoverin; from the painful operation that was periormc upon his left eye, removing it, and his health is greatly improved. Ex-Secretary Bayard is making extensive im: provements upon his Wilmington residence, and friends of the family in this city believe his marriage with Miss Clymer will not take | place until the late autumn. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. M. Heaton have gone to reside with their children at Tacoma park. Mrs. and Miss Emma Esch sail Tuesday next for Europe, to be gone about three mouths, Mr. Wm. N.
