What the Chief Officer of the Cynthia Says of the Collision. Further particulars of the collision of the Cynthia and Polynesian, of which mention was made in Tae Stam yesterday. show that when the Cynthia was struck those on deck had barely time to rush below and warn the mem- bers of the crew who were off watch and asleep in their berths to get on deck and swim ashore for their lives. Following is a list of the crew of the Cynthia who lost their lives: Hugh Ir- ving, chief cook, of Glasgow; Alexander Nicholas, sailor, Glasgow; Andrew Vance and Charlies McCracken, trimmers; James Low, fireman, Glasgow: James Ferron, boatswain; Charles Blackstock, mess-room boy, and David Young, a stowaway from Glasgow. John Coates, chief officer of the Cynthia, was seen on board the steamer Alcides. He was clad ina suit of clothes borrowed from a brother officer. He was below at the time of the catastophe. He felt a tremendous crash and rushed on deck, where he found that the Cynthia had been struck by a big steamer, which he learned wasthe Polynesian, and, both vessels backing from each other. he had barely time to observe anything. as the Cynthia be- gan to settle down. It appeared to be about seven minntes from the time he felt the shock to the time she sank. In the inquiry as to the state of affairs at the Cook county, ML, insane asylum yesterday, Dr. Clevenger, formerly a member of the medical staff there. testified that it was impossible for a reputable practitioner or attendant to ste there.
