A mecting of the executive board of the As- sociated charities was held last night at the central office, G street, near 8th. Mrs, Dr. Lamb read a paper by Oscar E. McCulloch, of Indianapolis, on the subject “The Tribe of Ishmael.” The monthly report of Secretary Emery showed that the central office received calls from 129 white and 24 colored persons for work during the month, and from 57 white and 29 colored people for alms. To the Editor of Tae Evextxe Star: The complaimt of “H.C.” in regerd to a dangerous and unnecessary obstruction in the middle of the pavement on V street, mentioned in Tur Star of May 20, is to the point, but it is not theonly one. There is, I venture to say, not a square in Washington, unless in the West End, where one or more of these stop-cock bexes do not stand ont above the pavement, and as many more without coverings. On H street, between 6th and 7th streets northwest, there are two of these nuisances deliberately placed in their altitudinous positions, when the pavement was relaid a couple of years ago.
