4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUFSDAY.. e lay 21, 1Ss9. CROSBY Ss. NOYES. dovased a ‘THE EVENING STAR has te fullest Local Circulation of any Newspaper in the World. and as an Advertising Medium is worth more than all the other papers published in Wi New York Office: Room 93, Tribune Building, The Star Out of Town. Tae Evestxe Star will be sent by mail to any address in the United States or Canada for such period as may be desired, at the rate of fifty cents per month. G2 But all such orders must be accompanied by te money, or the paper cannot be sent, as no accounts are kept with mail subscriptions. 3 —————- While there appears to be some divergence of views as to the propriety of removing car- Fiage blocks from the sidewalks, it is quite safe to say that no difference of opinion can be entertained in regard to the wisdom of requir- ing the tops of projecting water and gas pipe boxes throughout the city toconform to the level Of the pavement. In every part of the city, and ofte2 several times in a single square or block, these unsightly and dangerous projec- tions may be found, and it is no uncommon sight to see young, as well as oid persons, stum- bling over them. Indeed, it has happened more than once that painful and serious in- juries have been sustained from this cause. Now that Captain Symons bas carried his point in regard to the carriage blocks, let him turn his attention to the projecting boxes referred to. We will guarantee that in his raid on that nuisance he will meet with no opposition from the public, and we feel sure that his official superiors will second any efforts he may make in that direction. Another thing to which the district authori- ties may properly and advantageously give their attention, is the cutting away of the lower branches of most if not all of the shade trees along the sidewalks of the city. As a rule they hang too low for either beanty or utility. The shade is thus made so dense as to fre- quently destroy or dwarf the otherwise beauti- ful turf in the reservations and front yards, and at the same time it prevents free ventila- tion and circulation of air, thus creating damp- ness in houses, and often promoting disease. This even in dry weather. When it rains the under branches hang so low, from the weight of water, as to become a positive nuisance to pedestrians. If those responsible in the premises would walk out occasionally during or just after a hard shower or a protracted rain, as many people are obliged to do, they would certainly realize the force of this ob- jection. The new District Commissioners can make quite @ popular hit in starting on their official career by directing the proper steps to be taken to bring about a reform on these two points,— small matters though they may appear to be,— and the subject is respectfully submitted to their consideration. oo The New York yachtsmen are not making many preparations for the visit of the Valkyrie, beyond a good deal of talk about it. It seems to be generally assumed that the Volunteer will be chosen to defend the America cup; and as for the Paine cup, which is reserved exclu- sively for seventy-foot yachts, the feeling is spreading that the British vessel is at liberty to carry it off if she can win it from the Kat- rina, the Titania, the Shamrock, and the Bedouin. There is one consolation: If these four yachts are outsailed and the cup goes to England, some Yankee designer will tarn out a seventy-footer by next year which will enter British waters with a whoop and fetch it back again. It sometimes does your Uncle Samuel good to be beaten in a brush, when there are no great stakes depending on it. —— General Boulanger can hardly plume himself upon a great social success achieved in London. Baroness Burdett-Coutts tried to give him a send-off the other evening by inviting a dozen prominent persons to meet him at dinner. ‘The sntb. they visited on him were varied in character. Lord Cross refused to sit at the same table with him, and some others followed suit. The dowager Duchess of Cleveland was indignant at learning that she was expected to go out under the general's escort, and left the house. It is not wonderful that the hero of the cafes should be scrutinized somewhat se- verely in acity like London, where personal decency counts for something unless a man has a lofty title and lineage to counterbalance his delinquencies. General Boulanger probably keeps the same sort of company in the British capital that he did m the American. a Mrs. Folsom is to be heartily congratulated, not only on her marr’«ge with the man of her choice, but on the re~e’ which this will bring her from the prying gossips who have coupled hername with that of almost every eligible gentleman she has mst since she came to live in Washington. oo The best compliment the press has received this year was the refusal of the New York legis- lature to pass a vote of thanks to the reporters who have mercilessly exposed scandal after seandal as occasion has arisen, a Aud now, after it is all up and in place, duly dedicated, and visited daily by avast concourse of people, it turns out that the Eiffel tower ought not to be the Eiffel tower at all, but the Monguier tower, M. Eiffel having merely : ried into execution the ideas of a young engineer in his employ. The gentleman who bas thus far enjoyed the honors and will here- after have to fight for them, enjoys a positive advantage over Columbus and Shakspere and Falton in being on the spot to conduct his own defensive campaign, instead of having to lie still in the cold ground and leave all the man- agement to a parcel of heirs and admirers who know at best only half the truth. a If the second William of Germany will read the story of 1848, and see how the first William took an extended trip abroad as the result of too much severity in dealing with the working people, he may feel less enthusiasm over the battering policy as @ means of suppressing strikes. eis to be run by soda is already exciting the interest of the summer girl, who has decided to pick out her train hereafter by the kind of syrup it uses in combination. . Yes, in the merchant tailor’s realm—outside of that~ doubtful, ‘The most artistic hand must be seconded snd sustained by the finest grades of fabrics else the final effect will be marred. The moulding— however graceful—done in ugly patterns—seo- ond-class and ordinary weavings—will fall far below the standard of excellence upon which such talent showd perch, Our first care then was for the fabrics~The vest grades, the most pleasing patterns and the greatest variety of them were culled by us from America’s wealth of ingenuity, Then a search- ing glance across the water developed a mine of new ideas—new combinations—these wo in- cluded, The cost had not been counted—Our aspirations lead us to perfection—that’s our goal—and we're striving hard to reach it, These gems of weavings were placed in experts hands. Were cut, made, trimmed—in every single, minute detail as are custom garments— and finally delivered to us as the highest types of tailoring art—either ready-made or to order. We talk in this strain to-day, because for some time past we've harped on thecheaper grades—$10 to $15.
