Novzs, Treasurer Evening Star Newspaper Co. Subscribed and sworn to before me this twentieth day of May, A. D. 1389, Jou T. C. Crank, Notary Public. ———$—- - The April number of the Volapuk paper pub- lished at Constance by Schleyer, the inventor of the proposed universal language, records the end of the first ten years of the existence of the language, the publication of the bun- @redth number of the paper, and the issuance of the thousandth diploma to teachers of the language. Schleyer says. editorially: “I look back on these first ten years of Volapuk with mingled feelings; first, with great joy over the remarkable spread of Volapuk on the whole earth, and becanse of the beautiful literature of our young universal language of only ten year’s growth; but, second, also witha touch of sadness, because these very years have been years of hard work, years of deprivation, of sickness, of tribulations, of poverty, of strifes, of scorn—few, indeed, will believe the hardships I have endured.” The language whose invention caused Schleyer to be derided as a crank has of late grown re- markably in favor even among the English- speaking peoples, who have been repelled by certain peculiarities of Volapuk, especially cer- tain difficulties in pronunciation, and who have been the last of the leading civilized nations to take up its study and use with earnestnes: English Volapuk dictionaries, and hand-books have recently been published, Volapuk news- papers are printed in this country, and books of translations into Volapuk appear from time to time. The latest publication of this char- acter is a translation of the Proverbs of Solomon into the universal language, and the words of the man of wisdom now address them- selves to the Volupukist, whether he be a Chinaman or an American. The advantages of a simple, common language, by means of which the whole world may communicate, without, however, the surrender of any of the existing languages, are so obvious that the general use for international communication of Volapuk or @ modified Volapuk, or a substitute of some sort for Schleyer’s language, is among the strong probabilities of the future. — Somebody is spinning dreadful yarns in con- nection with the Oregon and Transcontinental company’s affairs. The Ames party publish an advertisement addressed to the stockholders, bearing date May 17, and soliciting proxies, be- cause they have ‘held during the past year the largest permanent investment in the stock of your company;” and side by side with it ap- pears one from the Villard party, dated just a day later, and calling for proxies on the ground that they have “held during the past year much the largest permanent investment,” &c. It is obviously impossible for the one party to have held “the largest” at the same time that the other party were holding “much the largest” permanent investment; but the Villard party go further and claim to represent “‘a majority of its (the company’s) capital stock.” If that is true, what do they want of anybody's proxies? Why do they not vote the stock they represent? 3 io P Chauncey M. Depew got off a peculiar com- rp or pliment to the press the other day when he ex- plained the celebrity of the Yale class of 1853 by saying that “one half its members went into journalism and praised the other half,” and yet that only partly solves the problem If the other half had not given the journalistic R D half something to praise, there would have iF Re E been no such wonderful growth of fame as has been witnessed. The key to success and celeb- rity, as Mr. Depew’s own career will testify, is SSg first to have something good to offer for the § public service, and then to advertise it for all it is worth. oo If any question is raised over the confirma- tion of Solomon Hirsch’s nomination for the Turkish mission when Congress meets next winter, Mr. Mitchell can be depended upon to see his fellow Oregonian through in safety if “senatorial courtesy” will do it. The Senator's term expires in 1891, and his most dangerous rival would have hard time in engineering the canvass at Salem froma place as far away as the shore of the Bosphorus, oo Considerable surprise is manifested by sundry northern newspapers at the establishment of a Grand Army post in Charleston, 8.
