T., May 17. 17.—Advices from Fort Thomas says that Cyclone Bill, who was ar- rested at Clinton Wednesday, is undoubtedly one of the gang that robbed Paymaster Wham. He answers the description of the lame man. He cannot explain his whereabouts during sev- eral hours previous to and after the robbery. Four others of the gang are known and will [a be arrested y. An Old Man Pulled from a Feather Bed and Given Seventy-Five Lashes. Cutcaco. May 17. Pelz’s wife, fearing that a mob would take him before moruing, had sewed him up in a feather tick, covered it over with a heavy mattress and then laid on the bed and feigned sickness. The couple fought the regulators like tigers while the old man was being pulled out of his feathery nest. Pelz was warned to leave the town at once. DR. IN. He is Now Said to Have Been Seen and Recognized In St. Louis. Sr. Lovrs, May 17.—A rumor circulated last night that Dr. Cronin had been seen in St. Louis and clearly recognized. Two gentleman, who knew Dr. Cronin well, saw him issue from a building on 10th and Franklin and enter a carriage. To add plausibility to the rumor it is known that two Chicago reporters and two well-known detectives, of that city, are in St. Louis and avoid saying why they are here. It is believed that they have information of such a character as to lead them tw believe that Dr. Cronin is in this city, and that they are here to unravel the mystery. A QUESTION ‘OF DUTY. P., will succeed Mr. Chapleau as secretary of state These appointments will cause great dissatis- faction throughont the country, as it is gener- ally conceded that Colby receives his appoint- ment because of the service rendered the gov- ernment | ssion by a powerful speech sup- porting the action of the administration on allowing the Jesuit’s estate act. Pocanoxtas City.—During the period in which the Arrow company was announcing here the building of the mammoth Pocahontas M. A. Buchanan, of Washington, purchased the square of ground opposite Battery Rogers for $3,000, sale survey was made, many score building lots laid out and Arrow City estab- lished there, with Pocahontas street running through it. The square, with a comfortable two-story brick house upen it, had been sold at auction in 1846, just before retrocession, for #430, to Irwin & Co. Some years ago it was sold to Capt. English for $1,200. He improved the place and sold it for $3,000. The property, after the sale at $3,000, was assessed at 72,000. At the last meeting of the city council the owner sent in a sharp protest against the assess- ment, and offered to sell the square at less than 2.000 to any member of the city council. But the members did not see in the proposal a good chance of Cry fags the real estate business, and referred the matter to the finance com- mittee.
