SOCIAL MATTERS. Family of the New British Minister— Personal Mention. Of Lady Pauncefote, wife of the new British minister, a recent London letter says: She isa few years younger than her husband. She is not a leader of fashion, but is in the best Meg and « thoroughly representative English lady. She is known in connection with charitab! organizations; but much of her work is done in such an unostentations way as almost to es- cape public notice. She is a charming hostess, who talks welland whose views have been broadened by Continental residence. Her drawing-room has attracted most of the dis- —— foreign di en and small but brilliant parties of European celebrities are wont to assemble in Cromwell Place. But one of the four daughters of the house is “out;” the others have not yet completed their educa- tion. The second is sixteen years of age, the third fourteen. and the youngest twelve. “The new minister has settled down to work here, and as soon as the state of business will permit he will run over to London, probably in July, and return with Lady Pauncefote and his daughters in time for the opening of the sea- son in the autumn. The farewell dinner that was given in honor of Colonel and Madame Bonaparte on Friday night at the Country club was a great success, There were thirty guests at table, among whom were Mr. and Mrs. Calderon Carlisle, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon McKay, Mr. and Mrs. Bacon, Mr. end Mrs. Linden Kent, Miss Gwynne, Mr. Percival Draper, Miss Rosalie Browne, Mr. Neilson Browne, Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson, Mr. ind Mrs. Aulick Palmer, Mr. Woodbury Blair, and Mr. Jesse Brown. Capt. and Mrs. John F. Rodgers are moving to-day from their 16th-street house to their country place, Chevy Chase, near the city, where they will spend the summer weather. It was to this romantic place that Mr. Joseph Chamberlain retired for a few days before his marriage with Miss Endicott last autumn. Mrs. 8. Lincoln leaves the city to-day for New York city, where she attends to-morrow the marriage of Miss Durkee and Mr. J. H. Crane, of that city. Mrs. Lincoln returns to- ward the last of the week and will bring with her Miss Gale, who will spend a few weeks as her guest. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Cabell have issued cards for a soiree musicale on Friday evening, May 24, in honor of Mr. Anton Gloetzner. ‘The ladies of St. Raul’s P. E. church on 234 street, will give a luncheon in the Grand Army hall for the benefit of the church on Wednes- day, to-morrow, from 12 to 3 o'clock; admission free. In the evening a concert will be given, at 8 o'clock, followed by dancing. Some of the ladies of the committee are A. B. Mullett, Mrs. Parker, Mrs, Valk, Mrs. Capt. Taylor and Mrs. Lieut. Bernadue. Mrs, Harding, wife of Rev. Alfred Harding, ae of St. Paul's Episcopal church, is in New ‘ork city, under successful treatment for her yes. Decker, Tuesday afternoon, 28th inst., at 6 o'clock, at the Metropolitan M. E. church. The marriage of Mr. J. R. Littell to Miss Mabel Raum will be solemnized at the residence of Gen. Raum, 1322 Rhode Island avenue, Thursday evening at 7:30. It will be witnessed only by the immediate families of the bride and groom and will be followed by a reception, for which cards have been issued. Mr. H. K. Willard, of K street, gave a beauti- ful “pink” dinner to a company of youn friends yesterday evening. Mrs. J. C. Boy (cousin of the host) chaperoned the party in the absence of Mrs. H. A. Willard from Rea cit: Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. E EB |2 Hay, Miss De Barré, Miss English, Miss Ka did Jones, Miss Hollybird, Mrs. J. C. Boyd, Mr. Trimble, Mr. Speake, and Mr. Walter Willard. Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Bastianelli, of New York city, are the guests of Mrs. Annie Johnston at the Clarendon. The Atlanta Constitution of Sunday says: Mrs. E. W. Halford and Miss Jannette Halford, wife and daughter of Hon. E. W. Halford, pri- vate secretary to President Harrison, arrived in the city last Friday. and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Angier at their summer home, “oak grove cottag near Angier springs. Mrs. and Miss Halford will be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Angier for ten days or two weeks, and then proceed to Washington via Louisville and Indianapolis. Friday night Miss Halford, ac- companied by Messrs. Alton and Wilmer An- gier, oceupied a box at DeGive's opera house, and seemed greatly to enjoy the rendition of “Pinafore” by Atlanta's artists. Quite a num- ber of prominent gentlemen took advantage of | Miss Halford’s presence at the opera to call at her box and pay their respects to the distin- guished visitor. The various foreign legations, particularly that of Austria, are deeply interested in the coming musical festival of the Choral society, and nearly all have taken tickets for the entire series of concerts. It is said that Mr. Gericke, the leader of the Boston Symphony orchestra, who is « native of Vienna, will be entertained at the Austrian legation while he ishere. Mrs. Harrison has accepted a box for both Friday and Saturday nights, and bas promised to be present herself and to induce the President to attend if possible. ‘Miss Nettie Holliday, who is Mrs, Harrison's —_ at the White House, is the sister of Mr. hn Holliday, editor of the Indianpolis News. Miss Holliday has spent the last six years in Persia, where she is one of the missionaries un- der the American Presbyterian Board of Mis- sions. She is a friend of long standing of Mrs. Harrison, and all of the family having been in- timate with them for many years. Miss Holli- day came back to this country last autnmn to visit her friends and to take a needed rest on account of her health, but expects to return before long to her work at Tabriz, Persia. She is very interesting in conversation and speaks most entertainingly of her work in Persia. She will give some ac- count of it and the life there this afternoon, at ¢ ‘clock, at the church of the Covenant. Mrs. jarrison. Mrs. McKee, who has returned from New York city; Mrs. Lord and Dr. expect to be present. Mr. Johu F. Chamberlin gave a very elegant and elaborate dinner last evening to twenty- seven congenial invited guests, each one of whom will unquestionably bear it in his memory as se of the notable entertainments of alife time. ‘or the occasion the large dining room on the second floor of the Hote! Chamberlin was used, and its decorations and those of the table were all that liberality could provide or good taste desire. In the center of the immense oval table at which the guests were seated stood a circular floral mound more than two feet in diameter, and fully as high, composed of snow balls and double peonies, of various colors. From this ran in four directions massive banks of the most beautiful and fragrant roses, while the snow-white linen cloth between these banks was literally covered by sprays of maiden- hair fern and exquisite rose buds, of the rare- est variety, so thickly strewn as to hide the ttern beneath. In addition to these floral orations there was laid at each plate an ap- Propriate boutonniere, each differing from the other. but all equally beautifal. That the viands sud wines were of the choicest, and served in the most faultless style, need not be formally said. That is understood when Mr. Chamber- lin summons friends to enjoy his hospitality. At one end of the table sat the genial and ac- complished host, with Commissioner Webb on his right hand and Gen. Batcheller, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, on his left. Opposite him was seated Judge MacArthur, flanked by Mr. P. A. Richardson, of this city, and Mr. John H. Beckman, of Boston. ‘The other 2 were: Senator Jones, of Nevada, Gen. Van liet, Gen. Bussey, Assistant Secretary of the Interior, Mr. D. K. McKee, Mr. Walker Blaine, Mr. 8. H. Kauffmann. Dr. Smith Townshend, Mr. P. V. Degraw, Messrs. Nicholas §. Hill, Edward L. Bartlett, Thos. J. Mackall, of this city. There has been but one line laid out for survey as yet, but it is likely, in fact it is Col. Hains’ intention, to survey several available routes before making his report. He said this morning that he ex- pected that the work of examining the routes would be completed within two months, when he would make his report to Gen.
