THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON ae RENOUNCING THE WORLD. Mise Kate Drexel in a Sisters of Mercy Convent. A special from Pittsburg to the Philadelphia Press says: Mies Kate Drexel, of Philadelphia, was admitted as @ postulate in the Mother a of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy in this city yesterday, She was immediately | aap? under the charge of Sister Eanes, mo- of the novices, and assigned to a narrow bed m the dormitory, with other postulants. This morning at 5 o'clock Miss Drexel, with other candidates for the novitiate in the con- vent, was awakened from her slumbers. She then had a half hour to perform her ablutions and don the coarse clothes which she was given instead of the handsome Ravalng, os tame she wore on the evening before. — consist of a plain dress made of cheap k material, a cloak or mantle made of the same cloth, and a tight-fitting black cap which she must wear a all times during the day. At 5:30 Miss Drexel joined her postulent com- ions and descended the stairway which led the chapel. Here she spent forty-five minutes in prayer and meditation. At 6:15 the convent chaplain entered and celebrated mass. After the services had been concluded the postulants marched to the refectory, where they partook of a breakfast of plain food. Then Miss Drexel and the other young ladies were put to work sweeping their dormitory, arranging their beds and atten to duties of a similar nature all over the building. When they had finished their tasks, all who aspired to be choir sisters went to the study hall, where they spent a couple of hours in receiving instructions in the profession of teaching, which th pursue on taking their final vow. noon was passed by Miss Drexel partly in work and the rest in study. At 8o’clock the postulants were again formed in line and went to the chapel, where they spent a half hour in devotion and prayer. At they went to their dormi- tory, and fifteen minutes later the lights were extinguished. Such is the record of Miss Drexel’s first day in Merey convent. Her millions did not gain for her the slightest release from the austere life of the postafant. She seeks to enter the Order of Mercy as a choir sister. She will fan be instructed in those branches gore B= fit her for the life of aneducator. On maki her final vows she will be assigned to some pose cational institution of the order and will not be required to do hospital duty or works of mercy only on extraordinary occasions, such as during the time of an epidemic or in time of war. Under ordinary circumstances this work is done by lay sisters, who are educated and trained especially for it. THE PERIOD OF PROBATION. The period of Miss Drexel's postulation or probation will extend abont five ‘months. She will then, if vouched for by the mother of novices, take the white veil and be admitted to the novitiate ef the order. She will spend two years as a novice, and then receive the black veil and will be a choir sister. Her money 1s yet in her own control, and it will remain 30 until she takes her final vows, Before this occurs she can dispose of it in any way she may think proper. but on entering the order as a choir sister she is not allowed to have a penny at her command. This will make the Sisters of Mercy reall: the richest order in the United States in avail- able cash or help. THE LIFE OF THE POSTULATE. Miss Kate Drexel is the second daughter of the late Francis A. Drexel, of Philadelphia, and is a niece of A. J. Drexel, the banker. She iss Lizzie Drexel and Mrs, Edward De V. Morrell, were the benefi- ciaries for life of a fortune of about $15,000,000, less certain specific legacies left by their late father. Each of the young, la adies has besides a private fortune of abunt $200,000, over which they have absolute control. Their income is about $400,000 a year each. The estate of their late father goes. according to his will, to the children of the beneficiaries, and in default of ixsue it is to be divided among certain Roman Catholic charities, to which a million anda half of dollars were given directly by will. Although perhaps the most wealthy sisters in the United States. they have always been noted for the extreme modesty of their life. They e1 tertained small parties generously, both at their town house, 1503 Waluut street, Philadelphia, lace at Torresdale, but nd hele religious bent has been marked, and their vast income devoted to religious and char- . Ther built the industrial home for boys at Eddington, near their country d charge the current expenses of on. The cost of the grounds and buildings was more thana third of a million dollars. They have also taken a special inter- est in the work of Christianizing the Indians, and Miss Kate Drexel has given 2150.000 to Iudian missions alone. Their private charities were numerous and ceaseless, and it is said that oue winter recently they were practically sup- porting over 300 poor families. FROM PARLOR TO CLOISTER. As to the causes which led to this action on the part of Miss Drexel, the Philadelphia Times says: The sudden transition of the young lady from the position of a belle of society and the mistress of millions to the place of a poor pos- tulate and doiug menial service in proof of her earnestness has brought out many interesting stories about her from those who know her well. As is usual when young ladies go in con- vents there are not wanting those who speak of disap) jointed love as a possible motive. As a ott to this it isan open secret that the young Tady has had repeated offers, which she gently but firmly repelled. There is in Philadelphia a very well-known bachelor, a member of the Philadelphia ciub, who is supposed to be a great lady-killer. When he began to show marked attention to Misa Kate Drexel and their names were associated there were people who nodded their heads confidently and said that of course the matter was settled. It was not settled and she told him. as she had so often before told her intimate girl and women friends, that she had no desire to marry, but had another and fixed purpose with which marriage would interfere. So there is nothing in the disappointed love theory. NOT A SUDDEN INSPIRATION, Miss Drexel has always been the most relig- ious member of her family. Almost the only books she read were religious works, and lately she a — to be somewhat influenced by Count Tolstoi’s writings inculcating com- plete self-sacrifice and utter unselfishness. Al- most everything with her took a religious turn aud she had an altarand many sacred relics in her own room. before which she prayed several times daily, Most of the fashionable people she met casually knew little of this. Her closest friends were religious people, and she was a great friend of Archbishop Ryan, who took a ‘eat interest in her ia consequence of her re- Ficus bent of mint. Indced, it is now as- asserted on what is considered the best au- thority that the young lady has been determined for three or four years to take the step she has taken. and all the persuasion of relatives and friends to move her from her purpose was una- vailing. All the Drexel houses were closed yesterday and the two other ers. Miss Lizzie Drexel and Mrs. Morrell, with Mr. Morrell and A. J. Drexel, sailed from New York yesterday. so Dinner to American Delegates. The American delegates to the Samoan confer- ence g: adinner at the Kaiserhof in Berlin last evening. The guests and their hosts were arranged as follows: Mr. Kasson sat at the mid- dle of the table, having on his right Count Her- bert Bismarck and Messrs. Coleman, Beau clerk aud Geniseh, and on his left Sir E. B. Malet, Lieut. Buckingham, Dr. Arendt and Lieut. Par- THE PARNELL COMMISSION. The Irish Leader’s Examination Con- cluded—Archbishop Walsh Testifies. Mr. Parnell's examination before the special commission was concluded yesterday. He testified that the reception committee in America comprised the leading merchants of New York, representative citizens and ministers of religion. In his speeches in New York wit- ness had declared that not @ farthing con- tributed to the Irish cause would go toward organizing rebellion in Ireland. Throughout his tour of the United States. he had never swerved a hand's breadth from that declara- tion, Attorney-General Webster, the witness said, had quoted from five out of sixty speeches he had made in the United States, ignoring the general tenor of his speeches so as to misrepre- sent his words. All the names the attorney-general had mentioned as those of persons who were as- sociated with the meetings were only a small tion of those who had attended. Men of prominent position and of undoubted re- spectability attended those meetings. Innosense could the American eras be identified with the proceedings of the physical-force poms Witness firmly believed that none of is colleagues since joining the Irish parlia- mentary party had had anything to do with the Fenians. Only casually did the Fenians come within the orbit of the constitutional move- ment. Here Mr. Parnell scored by remarkin, thatthe tories were more certainly associate with the movement, for instance, when they co- operated — ee obstruct the criminal code bill to the deat! Referring to some letters of his. Mr. ti core said he had copies from his secretary’ hand notes. WILLING TO SHOW HIS LETTERS, At this point Attorney-General Webster said: “It seems that there exists a book of copies of Mr. Parnell’s letters. I would like to s that book.” Z Sir Charles Russell—‘By all means.” Presiding Justice Hannen—“If these letters refer to the league they ought to have been disclosed.” a Mr. Parnell—“Your lordships are welcome to see any letter I ever wrote or received.” Attorney-General Webster, recurring to the examination of Mr. Parnell’s private bank ac- counts, wanted to trace a number of checks, and a warm discussion ensued. Sir Charles Russell declared that such action would be unfair. iggested a postponement of Justice Hannen the inquiry into this matter until fuller docu- ments were before the court. ARCHBISHOP WALSH HERE TOOK THE STAND. He testified that he came to the conclusion before 1879 that there was need of a defen- sive land organization, and was proceeding to give his opinion of the necessity of such an or- ganization when Justice Hannen interposed, saying the inquiry must be limited to whether or not the land league was necessary. Attorney-General Webster submitted that matters of opinion were not admissible. Mr. Biggar urged that opinion evidence had been given over and over again by “hirelings of the government.” Justice Hannen warned Mr. Biggar that he must not make use of such expressions. Mr. Biggar then said that une: ch evi- dence was admitted the whole inquiry would end in a farce. The Jud: here retired to consider the mat- ter privately. On their return Justice Hannen announced that they had decided that it was not permissible to ask any witness, however distinguished, abstract questions of opinion. ‘The facts known to the witness ought to be laid before the court before opinions based thereon were mentioned. The mere expression of Archbishop Walsh’s opinion, the justice said, was inadmissible. The archbishop, continuing, that in the course of his visits through Fis diccess be fad abundant means of knowing that the league denounced outrages. Many priests had joined the league with his full approval. He saw nothing in the action of the members of the league to forbid the clergy joining the organi- zation. GS Arecently published work on “The Art of Advertising” says: “A point which will aiford reliable information as to the value of a publi- cation as an advertising medium is the close- ness with which the publisher adheres to his advertising rates.” Tue Star invariably holds to its rates; and, what is of greater importance to the advertiser, it charges everybody the same price for the same service. A letter from the United States consul at St. Paul de Loanda, west coast of Africa, dated March 20, gives particulars of the explosion on board the whaling bark Sea Fox, of New Bed- ford, Mass., at Equimena, about March 1. The ship had put in for wood and water, and an ar- rangement was made with Antonio de Bastos Pina to partl P°s {or supplies in powder.
