Quick, of the reception committee, read an article from a morning paper which stated that Col. Drake, of Drake's Zouaves, Elizabeth, met Gov. Gordon, of —— and pinned his badge on the governor's breast, Misses and groans were heard on rt sides. Commander Burrows, of New Jersey, sprang to his feet and said that he would have 4 matter investigated and if be found thatthe article was true Col. Gurneniz, L T., May 2.—An old farmer named J. M. Barnhouse has arrived here from Unele John’s creek, 10 miles south of King Fishers, suffering from three broken ribs and badly burned about the face and arms. Barn- house had located on a valuable farm in a fer- tile valley. Cow boys attempted to drive him out, but after a desperate night were driven way. They then set fire to the prairie grass im the vicinity of Barnhouse’s claim and effected the destruction of the “Boomers” property. In endeavoring to stop a runaway team Barnhouse was thrown across a ditch and sastained internal injuries, from which it is feared he will die. ———__ A Bold Jewelry Robbery. Bostox, May 2._Two men entered W. B. Morse’s jewelry store, 263 ‘Tremont street, last night, and, being shown some diamonds pins, one of the men grabbed a pin worth $250 and fled. The proprietor ran after him, and the other man secured $500 worth of jewelry and left. Both are still at large. <a Mrs. Harrison Entertained. New York, May 2.—Mrs. President Harrison was entertained at dinner at the home of Whit- law Reid last night. To-day she will visit at Mr, Stephen B. Elkins’ house, and at night dine at tt F. Shepard’s, To-morrow night she will attend a reception at the house of Mra. Vannoster, in Brooklyn, and she will return to Washington on Satarday. <-> Gounod, the Composer, to Come Here. The trial from the begin- ning to the end attracted the most in- tense interest and the public mind was set and ronounced as to his sanity. Dr. John Scott, the father of Mrs, Harrison, and Mrs. Lord, have during her absence in New York, taken up their permanent abode in the White House. Dr. Scott has the room known as the east chamber on the north front of the house, which was the apartment of Nellie Grant when she was with her parents in the executive mansion. Reilly, Sr. The flags of the Washington steamers have been at half mast for the past two days out of respect tothe memory of the late John F. Reilly, sr., chief engineer of the steamer Ex- celsior, who died suddenly Tuesday evening. Mr. Reilly was in the service of the Potomac eamboat company for a period covering nearly forty years and was in charge of the steamers Mount Vernon, Powhatan, Chesa- peake, Sidney and the Baltimore, on the Poto- mac and Acquia Creek line, in connection with ne K. F. and P.R.R. This was back in the fifties. Atthe breaking out of the war, Mr. | Reilly entered the service of the United States government as engineer and was on the man- | of-war Wissahickou, Capt. Lea Davis, about eighteen months.and was afterward chief engi- neer of the Potomac and participated in several engagements with the South Atlantic squadron around Mobile, Savannah and the Florida coast. After the warhe returned to the ser- vice of the Potomac steamboat company and had charge as chief engineer of the Keyport, Georgeanna, Vanderbilt and Ironsides, The last named steamer was wrecked off Hog Island, outside of Cape Charles, whilst returning from e May, September, 1867. Reilly was in charge of the engines and displayed great cool- ness on this occasion.
