The rain was confined to Washington yester- as far as league base ball playing was con- cerned, and consequently the other parts of the procession moved on while the senatorial and Philadelphia divisions remained stationary. ‘The result was that Pittsburg took the lead in race, with Philadelphia second, New York, Boston, Indianapolis, and Cleveland tied for third place, Washington seventh, and Chicago let. This was done by the victories yesterday of Pittsburg, New York, and Cleveland. Capitol Perk was an artificial lake and the enthusiasts who had hoped to see the Statesmen redeem themselves by taking # game from their guests were sadiy disappointed. The Pittsburg team won from Anson's aggre- gation through better fielding, by the score of 5 to 4. It was an uphill contest, and the victory was due greatly to the steady work of Staley and Miller after the Chicago team had secured a lea Their four runs were secured in the first foar innings by means of hard and con- tinuous batting. The Chicago battery was Gumbert and Flint, and would have won but for the poor fielding of their supporters. Pittsburg made 6 hits and 1 error, and Chicago 10 hits and 4 errors.
