THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON WEDVESDAY Apri 24, 1589, CROSBY s. NOES. “THE EVENING STAR has the fallest Local Cireviation of any Newspaper in the Werid. and as an Advertising Me more than all the other papers published in Washington. Editor, The Oklahoma of the present is a place Where ove fights for his land and buys his water. Well populated towns are springing up on sites which are paved thickly with conflict- ing claims, promising a rich harvest for real estate lawyers. By wee has been had to the rifle as the umpire between land-claimants, and deaths have resulted, but not so far to such an extent as the numbers, passions and arsenal- bearing characteristics of the in-rushing mul- titude had suggested as probable. While the wonderful process of instantaneous state-mak- {ing is going on. contention, litigation and snf- fering may be expected as inseparable accom- paniments. In the end « progressive American community will develop to take its place by the Bide of its sister states. The rush for Okla- homa indicates that the area of unoccupied public land in the west has been reduced to very small proportions. Only a few such vents to superfluous Americ: y as that fur- ished by Oklabama are or can be available. But there is a vast expanse of land in the west the title to which is in the original grantees of the government, and which can be cheaply bought without the inconveniences attending the procurement of title from the United States. There are also great stretches of good and cheap lands in the southeast quarter of the republic. In spite of the threatening sug- gestions of the Oklahoma scramble the people of the United States are not in any immediate Ganger of being overcrowded. $a Sir Julian Pauncefote has shown his diplo- Matic quality at the outset of his career in the Tnited States by his treatment of the presa. It must seem odd tothe Englishman of any note, who at home is left undisturbed by the reporters, except when he chooses to place himself at the public's disposal. that the instant he reaches American shores he is pounced upon by agroup of young men with pads and pen- cils in hand, who want him to state his impres- sions of the country, the people, and eve thing else. Very often the young men meet with a rebuff, finding their victim a most un- sociable creature. At other times they are astonished to hear only criticisms upon the erudities of our civilization. the newness and veneer which strike him unfavorably at every turn. They faithfully set down all that is told them and all that is refused as well, and their readers form an opinion of the newcomer as without ideas because he is taciturn or sour- minded because he has reached his disagreeable conclusions so promptly. The first interviews are, therefore,a rather trying ordeal to the visitor. The new British minister has run the Gauntlet successfully. a A hundred years makes a great difference in the way of doing tl in a fast-moving coun- try. The people of Elizabeth, N. J., are in the midst of a celebration of the hundredth anni- versary of Washin through that on’s pa city on the way to New York tobe inaugurated. Washington passed through in a coach, in the course of a long and tedious journey. A Pres- ident-elect now- ys. if he has occasion to visit New York « by way of New Jersey, passes through Elizabeth on a vestibule train, and occupies the brief wait in getting his over- coat, umbrella and grip-sack down from the racks and into the hands of the porter for dust- ing. preparatory to disembarkation a few min- utes later at Jersey € and the only people who make any great fuss over him are a few applicants for office, who bring a brass band br a small cannon down to the depot and have hardly time to wake the echoes before their man is off again.
