H Mrs. Harrison's reception yesterday was very Ploneant and well attended by s company of | brilliant callers. Miss Murphy was present during the hour. The young ladies of a Rich- moud school, accompanied by their teacher, — their respects to the lady of the White jouse and told her of the visit they paid to President Cleveland and of his very cordial reception. Others present were Mrs. Blaine, Mr. Emmons Blaine, Mrs. McLean, Captain and Mra. Bugher, Gen. and Mrs. Anson G. McCook, Mrs. Hazen, Mr. J. J. Emery, of New York; Miss Breckinridge, Miss Ida Thompson, Mrs. Koss Thompson, Mrs. and Miss Ingalls, Mrs. J. W. Foster, Mrs. Alvin Bartlett, Mrs. Halladay, Mrs. Gordon Mackay, Mrs, Major Parker, Mrs. Springer, Senator and Mrs, Morrill, Mr. Rus- sell Harrison. Mrs. McKee was indisposed and did not come down stairs. After 4 o'clock Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Lord took the children out r # drive, and the President was accompanied by Secretary Blaine. Minister and Mrs. Palmer called before the driving party left the White House. Mrs. Palmer takes luncheon with Mi Harrison to-day and Minister Palmer will drive with the President this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer will leave here to-mor- row for New York en ronte to Detroit. On the 25th, next Thursday, many prominent men of Michigan, regardless of party distinctions, will unite in giving him the grandest public dinner Detroit has ever seen. Several gentlemen here have received cards of invitation. Ex-Post- jnaster-General Dickinson and ex-Minister Lothrop are upon the committee, The dinner Will be followed by a reception. Drs, Alonzo Platt, the mother of Mrs, Dick- inson, who died in New York city yesterday gfternoon. the family being on their way to Detroit, was with the ex-Postmaster-General’s family while they wece in this city. Mra. Platt had been an invalid for some years, but was better while in this city. She did not appear at Mrs, Dickinson's receptions. and was there- “fore only known to the few who called especially tosee her and were taken to her apartments. John Sidney | 4 SITTING ON THE STAIRS DEAD. An Old Man Fires a Bullet into His Bre: HOW THEODORE F. SCHUMACHER ESCAPED ARREST— HE HAD BEEN DRINKING HEAVILY, AND, THREAT- ENING TO KILL HIS WIFE. SHE STARTED TO HAVE HIM ARRESTED—THE WARRANT NEVER SERVED. Theodore F. Schumacher ended his life last night by sending « bullet through his bread, Theodore was seventy-five years old and lived with his wife and family at No. 1002 South Cap- itol street. He was a gardener by trade but has not done much work for some time. Re- cently he bas been drinking heavily and caused a commotion in the neighborhood by abusing his wife, who has been compelled to go out to work to support herself and children. Yesterday the old man was sober. He re- mained home during the earlier part of the day, but in the afternoon he left the house and remained away some time. When he returned in the afternoon he was ina bad humor and acted as if EITHER DRUNK OR cRazy. His actions were so violent that the children were afraid of him. His wife was busy with her household duties when he entered, but he interrupted her with his usual threats, She had become used to that, and at first paid no attention to him, but his mood was different from what it had been, and his wife becai frightened. He declared that he would her, and started to load his revolver. Fearing he ‘might carry out his threats, Mrs, Schne dren. Her husband did not follow her, but qnietly closed the door and locked it. Before leaving the house she threatened to have him arrested, but he declared that he was not going to be arrested; that he WOULD RATHER DIF THAN SUBMIT TO ARREST, Mrs. Schumacher hastened to a justice of the peace and swore out a warrant charging her hasband with threatening her. The warrant reached Lieut. Boteler’s station and was placed in the hands of Policeman Lewis for service. The trial of James Waters, indicted for re- ceiving the goods alleged to have been stolen recently from the residence of Mr. Britton, Lieut. Tyler and Senator Dawes, for which robberies George Parker and others are under indictment, begun in the Criminal Court yes- terday afternoon. Testimony was given by Mr. Britton and Mrs. Tyler, identifying the n articles; Mrs. Fry, a colored woman, living near Waters’ place, who kept some bundles for Waters, and Detective Raff and officers who made the arrest. ‘The trial goes over till Tuesday. ———_—_ Georgetown Madrigal Society. Tn the autumn of 1887 a number of people in- terested in chorus singing, and for the most part resident in Georgetown, organized a sing- ing society, now known as the Georgetown Madrigal society. Early in the winter of 1887-88 regular weekly rehearsals were commenced in Durtis hall, under the leadership of Randolph L Geare, There were about thirty active members. A list of passive membera was also formed. The first public rehearsal of the s0- was given in May, 1888, at Linthicum hall, and was considered fairly successful, both fron a musical and financial standpoint. The society, with considerable increase in the number of active members, has been rehearsing steadily during the past winter, and the second public rehearsal is to be gs en in Linthicum hall on Tueeday, the 7th of May.
