The neighborhood of New Jersey avenue and Pierce street northwest was in an uproar all day yesterday, because of a dispute about the ownership of an old shanty. It appears that about twenty years ago, acolored man named John Ware, leased a lot of ground on Pierce street, near the corner of New Jersey avenue, and erected a house on it, and has lived there ever since. His lease expired ten years ago, since which time, it is alleged, Ware has not paid rental of the property, supposing he was its lawful owner. Mr. Alfred Beall, who keeps grocery store at the corner of New Jersey avenue and Pierce street, recently purchased the property, and gave Ware notice to move. Ware believing he was the Militiamen all over the country are awaken ing into activity and making great preparations for the summer campaign, The War depart- ment is daily in receipt of requisitions for ord- nance and quartermasters’ stores, under the annual $400,000 appropriation, from mearly every state and territory, not only from old organizations but from new ones just coming into existence. Particularly in the territories is the activity noticeable, the folks there being seemingly thoroughiy aware of the advantages: of a well organized and equipped militia force. The old organizations in the cast are gradually CHANGING THEIR EQUIPMENT to conform to that of the regular army, Most , all of the requisitions that come are accom- owner of the rty declined to vacate. The {District of Columbia, added the officer, is not a bit backward about making re quisitions for stores. The militia here, however, isons different footing from that of the other parts of the country, They are provided with stores out of a general appropriation of 2400,000, limited to ordnance and quartermasters’ supplies, while the recent District militia bill makes it ible for the District to draw upon the supplies pro- vided for the army, including not only ord- nance and quartermasters’ stores, but signal corps and hospital corps equipmenta, which are not allowed to the other troops, There is also no limit upon the quantity to be issued but — fixed by the judgment of the Secretary of ‘ar, and Ware was taken to the Police Court, Where the attorney declined to entertain the charge made against him, WOMEN START A FREE FIomT. In the meantime the female members of Ware's family returned to the premises, but were refused admittance by Marshall E. Carrier, Mr. Beall’s nephew. Mrs. Ware, it is alleged, struck Carrier in the face. This started a tree fight, and brickbats were sent flying through the air. Some one blew a police whistle, which attracted the officers to the scene. Before they arrived a colored man named William Langster was struck by a brick and badly injured. The women succeeded in getting into the unroofed house, and one of them was thrown over the fence. Once more quict was restored, and dur- ing the afternoon Judge Bradley issued a tem- porary restraining order, enjoining Ware from tearing down the house.’ Warrants were sworn out on both sides, and the parties appeared in the Police Court this morning.
