Platt is again in the city looking after the New York offices, He came in last night with ex-Representative Payne. It is expected that he will settle all the pending dificulties over the remaining New York York city appointments before he leaves, This afternoon he was closeted with | White House he said toa Star reporter that he was still in doubt about what would be done by the President, but that he hoped to find out before departing. WHAT MR. PLATT I8 HERE FOR. “That's what I am here for,” he sai came to Washington to look after those appoint- ments. Ihave not yet seen the President, but Iam just going to see what Ican find out.” He said he expected to be in Washington for a day or two, e are other matters, perhaps, besides | the New York city appointments to call for his attention. He is, of course, interested in the placing of patronage throughout the state, and e will doubtless go over the whole field with the President. The contest in the city is over the surveyorship, the appraisership, and the office of district attorney, AS TO NAVAL OFFICER, it is pretty generally understood that Mr. J. N. Knapp will get the appointment. The appraiser's office is a very important one, and it is understood that in a quiet way a very vigorous contest is pending for it, The olitician candidate for this office is Donald McLean, and it is said thatPlatt ard the wo ers generally favor his appointment. But A’ sistant Secretary of the Treasury Tichenor wants the office to go to an experienced man, and has in his mind for the place Assistant Ap- praiser Stevens, The fight between Willis and Jacobus over the surveyorship is still unsettled, unless an understanding has been reached between the President and Mr. Pla a THE CHEROKEE LANDS. The Commission Which is to Negotiate With the Indians. The commission which has been appointed to negotiate with the Cherokee and other Indians of the Indian territory owning lands west of the 96th meridian will mect in this city next week. The main object of the meeting will be to confer with the officials of the Interior de partment relative to their duties and pow under the law. The commission have authority to offer the Cherokee Indians $1.25 per acre for the land known as the Cherokee outlet, and if this price is agreed tothe President can issue a proclamation declaring these lands open for settlement. The lands recently thrown open for settlement by proclamation, known as the Oklahoma lands, are only a very stall part of the Indian territory. There are som 1,800,000 acres which, under the recent } mation, will become available for homestead settlement on the 22d d ff April.
