A Disastrous Fire at the and Potomac Round-H. A fire at the Baltimore and Potomac round- house, at South Capitol street and Virginia | avenue, yesterday morning, at 10:45 o'clock, did considerable damage to railroad property, and made the biggest smoke that has been seen in the city for years, Three hundred and twenty barrels of oil, a shed and eight freight cars were destroyed. A strong wind from the south blew the dense black smoke from the burning oil over the eastern part of the city, and it bung for a long time over Capitol Hill like a heavy cloud. The immense volume of smoke gave notice to the whole city of the fire. Many who were on their way to church got the | fire fever and hastened to the scene of the con- ‘tion. Soon thousands of people were gathered on the ridges of the hills, on the tops of cars and in the open s about the scene. On a platform near the round-house were stored a large number of barrels of lubricating oil The fire appears to have originated under the platform among a heap of old rags saturated with ol. The flames were seen to shoot out from beneath the platform by John Murphy, an employe of the railroad company, and almost in an instant the whole mass of oil was in flames. Breaking from the barrels, the oil flowed down upon the tracks in flaming streams, The fire department was called out and the railroad men went to work to save the cars on neighboring tracks. All were except eight freight-cars, which were destroyed. The streams of water from the fire-engines seemed to have little effect on the flames, To prevent the spread of the fire, by the flowing of the oil. men with shovels hastily constructed earth dams. By hard work the fire was con- fined toa small area, Fortunately the flames were driven northward by the wind, and on that side there was a wide stretch of commons and no buildings. The loss to the railroad com- pany is estimated at $8,000. The loss will be increased somewhat by work necessary in re- placing warped rails. THE ORIGIN OF THE FIRE which broke out in the northeast corner of the oil shed is supposed to have been spontaneous | combustion. There were about 150 barrels of oil destroyed, and at one time there was a blaze over a space of over 200 feet square covered by the oil. The evidence of the manner in which | the railroad hands worked is to be seen to-day in a number of them, whose blistered in endeavoring to save the cars, eighteen of which, including a Pullman and several passengers cars, were for a time in | eat danger, but they were saved, with the loss of six empty freight cars, valued at $3,000. ite ote Elections of Officers. Correspondence of Tux Evaxtwe Stam: Rockviiue, April 1, 1889. Within the past week an effort is being made among our business men and farmers to form @ company for the purpose of grading and repik- | ing the Rockville and Georgetown turnpike from | this place to the District line, a distance of 9 | miles. Several gentlemen of the county and | the District have so far interested themeelved | in the matter as to empioy Mr. G. M. Anderson, | 8 civil engineer, to examine the route and give the probable cost per mile of the improve- ment. The citizens of this part of the county | are alive tothe importance of this work, and would, no doubt, subscribe liberally to the | Stock of a company in the hands of solid enter- | prising business men. Two routes are available | for the proposed road, one on the bed of the | present pike and the other on the line of the old Georgetown road, which leaves the pike at | Bethesda post-office and counects with it again | near Montrose, about 3 miles from this place. The latter route is comparatively level, having | but one hill of any consequence on it, ' Duri } the last two years a large portion of this oli toad has been piked by the farmers living along | the route. The route by the present turnpike | is a succession of hills and valleys, but woul | have the advantage of having a large propor- tion of the stone to be used already on the ground. A proper grading of the road would be heavy work, in addition to numerous culverts which would have to be built. Should a company be formed it is understood that the enterprise will be liberally aided by the basi- ness men of the District. Letters of administration on the estate of John W. P. CONFERENCE, Correspondence of THk EVENING STAR. Lyxcunvre, Va., March 30, The announcement of the reinstatement of Mr. C. W. Vickery as superintendent of the third division of the railway mail service created quite a ripple of excitement among the postal clerks bere, and the majority of them consider their early removal a foregone com | clusion. Washington has recently been visited by seve eral delegations of oftice-seekers from 1} burg, conspicuous among them being Judge Charles P. Latham, Dr. J. B. Walthall and J. M. McLaughlin, all aspirants for the postmaster- ship. Latham and McLaughlin are Mahoneites, while Walthall is chairman of the auti-Mahone faction here. The internal-revenue collector- ship of this district, which is now held by Ham Shepperd, of Staunton, with headquarters in this city, will, it is thought, go to Capt. P. H. McCall, of Salem, as a reward for his defeat in the congressional race against Hon. Paul V. Edmunds last year. Besides, McCaul is strongly indorsed by both the Mahone and anti-Mahone factions of the Capt. J. C. Featherst of Bedford county, United States statistician agriculture for Virginia, having recently re- moved to Florence, Ala., to reside, Mr. B. Walker Bocock, a nephew of Hon. Thos. 8.
