F. B. Noyes, Treasurer Evening Star Newspaper Co. Subseribed and sworn to before me this tighteenth day of March, A. D. 1939, Jo T. C. Crarr, Notary Public. + The annexation of Canada is an excellent di- version for the Senate between batches of ap- Pointments from the White House. Such a sandwiched discussion every day or two will serve to draw out the opinion of the Canadians themselves and to les? Old England to show her hand in the matter. Rapidly 10 past the Dominion has been growing away from the old country and acquiring by force of ex- ample and emulation thorough-going ideas of independence and self-government. Her tariff is like our own high and strongly protective. Her elements of population like ours are shift- ing, restless and energetic. She has been run- ning in debt to build railroads and develope her vast resources. Her government almost by force of contact with ours is republican, and to come into the United States and keep step to the music of the Union would be an almost im- perceptible transition. Those are excellent reasons for annexation. But there is another side to the question. Canada carries a bigger debt in proportion to population and resources than we do. We should be obliged to assume it in part. Her people are in some sections ex- evedingly clannish, ignorant and un-Ameri- can. Her French population is two cen- turies behind the age. Her northwestern territory is larger than she can well manage. It would involve the United States in great expense without adding any very grea advantages as affording lands for settlers. The tides of immigration are seeking warmer climes now. The annexation of any large country to this could not fail to upset for a time the equi- libriam of our system of government. It would also set a precedent fraught with possible dan- gers. With Canada annexed, American busi- hess interests might soon be clamoring for the coalescence of Mexico, the Central American states and Cuba. Whichever way we go, to the bleak north or the blistering south, we en- counter danger, The temperate golden mean is ours already and it may be enough. $< The acquittal of Kerr, the treasurer of Jake Sharp's Broadway railroad company, of the crime of bribery astounds New York, where the former convictions had caused everybody to think Sharp's confidential assistant was equally guilty with the principal. It is notable that the popular verdict remains practically un- changed by the result of the trial, The testi- mony was defective in comparison with that adduced at the previous trials, and Fullgraff, the leading witness, seemed to have forgotten all that he had ever known or sworn to before ‘The effect of this long series of trials has doubtless been salutary, although it cannot wholly root out the deep-seated villainy that fills the lower stratum of civil positions in New York city. There may be less bribery but there will be blackmail. The fellows who want to buy public officials will be chary, but the same streak of brutal cupidity will be found on hand to extort the equivalent of bribes where- ever the chance offers, + Miss Mary Anderson's breakdown will not be fully understood by the public, perhaps, for some time to come, but there is nothing un- reasonable in the theory now advanced that her jong coutinued travel by rail has caused a ner- vous disorder from which she can hope to rally ouly after a thorough rest. The wonder is, not that players who pass half the year “on the road” give way now and then to the strain, but that this does not occur much oftener, The rattle and jar of the cars, no matter how care- fully guarded against by soft cushions and pliant springs, is bound to induce spinal troubles in persons of a certain delicacy of or- ganization, en ordinary travelers, who make long journeys spasmodically, sometimes become chronic victims of vertigo. Railway panies often have to lay their most valued servants off the trains for a while to give them « chance to repair the mental as well as physi- cal damage wrought by continual jolting over the trucks. It is to be hoped that a period of complete quiet will restore to Miss Anderson the health whose impress once lent so rare a charm to her natural beauty of feature. Every Washingtonian who improved the glo- rious weather of yesterday by a walk into the suburbs and saw the spring verdure breaking through the clay, must have realized that it Was St. Patrick's day from the way in which all nature was putting “the green above the red.” $$$ Under their new king the Servians will at least be free from the matrimonial bickerings that have char, Alexander can scarcely hope to marry for ten Years yet, and by that time, if matters keep on as they Lave been going, it is possible that Ser- via will have been swallowed up by Rassia, treaty or no treaty. a Henry George is to be congratulated. He has drawn from the London Times one of those savage attacks for which it has become so famous under its present management. If he can contrive to goad his assailant into publish- the atmosphere of the court | with scandal for so longa period. The little ing a few forged letters purporting to implicate him in the White-cap outrages or the bald- knobber murders, his fortune will be made, and the single-tex theory will receive a boom scarcely second to that which the Irish patriot cause has enjoyed since Pigott sealed his con- fession with suicide, ‘The good example of one bachelor governor after be became President is soon to be followed by another bachelor governor with presidential aspirations. Gov. Hill no longer makes any secret of his engagement to marry a young lady of Elmira, N. Y., the daughter of a friend and former neighbor. If there be anything in the idea that Mr. Cleveiand’s mistake was in marrying too late, Mr. Hill proposes to avoid a like error. ee Now that the Prince of Wales has cast his royal eye favorably on the American natioual game, it is expected that the Anglomaniacs on A Tae Paras Roa. oo FE NN iN o> BM EFS PSN HT RAN &% Oo O PPP FE NNN DE £38 8 OoPr EF NNN NN Go .. oo Pp ERE NNN IsoN NN GGG 2 POSITIVELY TERMINATES WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, AT 6 P. They may well be called the “Queen” of Printed Cottons, for this Season's productions are of surpassing beauty and good taste, In general effect they are hardly distinzuish- able from India Silks, and there is an originality in desicning and a beauty in color-printing sel- dom found outside of the most costly silk fabrics.
