INAUGURATION INCIDENTS. Interesting Scenes Before and After the Swearing in. Senators Cullom and Hoar escorted Presi- dent Harrison into the capitol yesterday, while Senator Cockrell acted as guardian to ex-Presi- dent Cleveland. Senator Cockrell was, to use s | W. popular expression, “rattled.” He bore aloft am open umbrella, and under this he sheltered the ex-President and himself. When he en- tered the building it did not strike him that the proper thing to do would be to lower the sun- shade. He just kept right on as though the rain was dropping on him as it had been out- side. As they entered the corridor leading from the rotunda to the Senate somebody jarred the Missourian a little, and the result was that Mr. Cleveland's silk hat was raked off the ex-presidential head, and it would certainly have been crushed and trampled upon by the crowd had not Mr. Cleveland caught it as it bounded off Mr. Cockreil’s shoulder. The hat was saved, but it was a badly bruised looking specimen of Knox's art when it was again put on. Even that incident failed to convince Mr. Cockrell that it was not necessary to carry expanded umbrellas in the capitol, end it was not ot until the party entered the Senate lobby that the confused legislator lowered his gingham. GENERAL HARRISON AND MR. CLEVELAND conversed for a few minutes before entering the Senate to witness the swearing in of the Vice-President. It was an impressive moment when General Harrison walked down the center aisle to the seat placed for him in the Senate chamber. His Prince Albert coat was buttoned close across his chest, his step was firm but light, and he possessed a perfect repose of bearing and of countenance. He looked*neither to the left nor the right until he got just in front of the President's desk; then he bowed htly to Mr. Ingalis and to the Chief Justice. He was pale, but there was nothing self-conscious or constrained in his manner. The whole assem- Dlage stood until he was seated. LADIES ON THE PLATFORM. Mrs. Harrison, Mrs. Morton, Mrs. Russell Harrison, Mrs. McKee, the Misses Mor- ton, Mrs. Elliot J. Shepherd, and two or three other ladies faced _ the rain and went upon the stand near the Presi- dent. Just before the ceremony was over Miss Morton fainted and was taken into the capitol. The defivery of the inaugural address was most remarkable for the occasion. Usually there is no attempt at oratorical effect by a President taking office. They have not usually been orators. GENERAL HARRISON'S VOICE $ was clear and every word was distinctly enunciated. When he took the oath his hat was removed. He turned to the —— below, slowly re- Placed his hat, wipped his’ spectacles and carefully adjusted them, settled the lapel of his coat and began deliberate The inflection of his voice denoted every sha: le of meaning to his words. His pauses were graceful and effective, and his voice was raised or lowered at the proj instant for oratorical expressiveness. 18 gestures were those of a polished speaker. At no moment did he appear nervous or ill at ease. His bearing was perfect. At the close of the address Mr. S. H. Ran- all, of the New York republican county com- mittee, Proposed three cheers for President Harrison. ‘They were given with a will. IN THE VICE-PRESIDENT’S ROOM. President Harrison entered the Vice-Presi- dent's room, where Mr. Morton was waiting, while Mr. Cleveland went on to the President's room. He conversed for a few minutes with Maj. Praden, and then, in re- sponse to an intimation that he was bein; waited for, he retraced his steps throug the lobby. tor Edmunds met himand gave him a hearty handshake. Each told the other he was glad to see him. and the Ver-| monter audibly wished the ex-President ahappy and successful future. A few feet further on stood the rotund Tom Reed. He bowed to Mr. Cleveland, and Ser Wilt er oe Were eer Be WERTEBRE ASS nos AF YALE arp WANTED HELE. i WORK, AT FUS- Pet cant ieratcd on Wz us AND FEMALE COOKS, LAUN- Sire ine aw. ‘European sa to PRANCIS HU = 3 one Wsrdnge mreor APPRENTICE: sre HOGEE REAL ESTATE, LOANS AND INSURANCE.
