SOCIAL MA’ MATTERS. Secretary and Mrs. Wi Whitney's Last Re- ception—Personal Mention. Secretary and Mrs, Whitney held the closing reception last night of one of the most brilliant series ever given at the capital. The hospita- ble house was thrown open at 9 o'clock, and soon after that guests began to arrive. Mrs. Whitney wore a dress of silver brocade, with skirts of tulle, a diamond necklace and white plumes in her hair. The Secretary stood by ber side all the evening, supplementing his wife's cordial greetings with a hearty welcome for all. Mrs. Paran Stevens, of New York, stood near them, and was presented to the guests. She wore a decolette gown of red satin, brocaded in a pattern of ostrich feathers. It was paneled down one side with feathers and on jhe other with gold embroidered red crepe. Her hair was dressed high, with red feathers, crepe and diamonds, and she wore diamonds on olive green velvet about her throat, and a splendid necklace of many strands of pearls.
