Mark Cole, of the steamer Sentinel, vouches for this incident, according to a dis- patch from Cairo, Dll: On Wednesday last, while in mid-river en route to Golconda, he crippled with a shot-gun a huge black eagle which was soaring slowly toward the Kentucky shore. The bird fell about a hundred yards on shore below Hamletteburg, and after consider- able trouble was secured and taken abourd the boat. Its wings precast 8 feét 2 inches from tip to tip. The bird was taken to Golconda, and, as it was scpposed to be badly crippled aud unable to fly, it was put in a courtyard, which is surrounded bya high wire fence. A Disaster that Might Occur at the Government Printing Office. Some days ago it was deemed necessary by the water department to replace a broken tap in the neighborhood of the government print- ing office, and it became necessary to reduce the pressure in the main for a short time in order to replace the broken tap. Public Printer Benedict, in a letter to the Commissioners, complained that the water was turned off with- out the knowledge or consent of the proper of- ficials, and that the water in the three boilers | reached a most dangerously low point, and not only endangered the safety of hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of public property, but the lives of the two thousand persons em- ployed in the building as well, The water- office officials denied Mr. Benedict's state- ment, and asserted that the superintend- ent of the building was notified that the pressure would be reduced. The matter was supposed to have ended, when a few days ago the Commissioners received another letter from Mr. Benedict stating that he had the Positive statement of the superintendent that was not notified. Mr. Benedict said further that he deemed it his duty to call the Commis- sioners’ attention to the conflict in testimony, | as the whole truth and exact facts in such a serious matter should be fully shown. The matter was again referred to Capt. Lusk for report. In passing upon the case, he says: “There is no doubt that the water tapper no fied the engineer in charge of the boilers, and the person whom he understood to be the superintendent of the building. that it would be necessary to reduce the pressure for not to exceed five minutes, The work was done as romptly as possible, and, in my opinion, all The notice that would be reasonably asked was given considering that haste be necessary to prevent danger to the main. A much more im- portant consideration arises from the statement of the ss printer that this temporary reduc- tion of pressure for a period not longer than five minutes, and with notice given both to the engineer in charge of the boilers and to some one understood by the water tapper to be the superintendent of the building, ‘not only en- dangered the safety of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of public property, but the lives of the two thousand employed in the building as well.’ The water supply to the —— printing office is dependent upon e pose of a line of cast-iron pipe, com- of thousands of sections. any one of Pek is liably to be ruptured at any time. The water pressure may thus at any moment be taken entirely off without notice for an un- known period, From both the letters of the (mange printer it 9 pears that an accident of the ‘ind would almost certainly be followed by the destruction of the buildings under his control, and the loss of human life in great numbers. It the circumstances are as indicated in these letters, then the present connections for feed- ing the boilers are terribly defective, and no time should be lost in providing a tank or tanks of sufficient capacity to remove the liability to disaster, which, with the existing arrange- ments, Mr. Benedict declares to be ever- resent.” The case will be looked into by the ommissioners. — The Annual Tax Sale. A LARGE ATTENDANCE AND BRISK BIDDING. There was an unusually large crowd to-day at the annual sale of property for taxes levied on real estate in the District of Columbia in arrears July 1, 1888, Chief Clerk Collins, of the collector’s office, was the auctioneer. The bidding was auite brisk, and Collector Davis said it looke as if it was going to be the largest sale of the kind the District ever had. After reading a description of the lot for sale, Mr. Collins would invite bids. If no one made an offer he would declare the District the pur- chaser, It is expected that the sale will con- tinue for some time. The property under the letters A and B were sold =. e sale will continue to-morrow morning at ‘clock. bs ste eS Electrical Notes. From the New York Times. The Victorian age, according to Frof.
