NEITHER DELEGATION GETS MUCH COMFORT—A COMPROMISE MAY BE MADE ON CORNELIUS BLISS FOR THE NAVY DEPARTMENT—REPRESEN- TATIVE BOUTELLE’S VIEWS. Gen. Harrison certainly had an opportunity yesterday to learn as to the respective merits of Hon. Warner Miller and Hon. Thomas C. Platt, for his principal visitors were from New York, end the condition of the factional con- test in the Empire state was very fully ex- plained. Mr. John F. Plummer, president of the New York dry goods campaign club and vice-president of the Union League elub, went to Indianapolis at the invitation of the Presi- dent-elect, and first had an interview on Sun- day night. Yesterday he spent some time again with Gen. Harrison, in company with Mr. A. E. Bateman. Both these gentlemen are warm friends of Warner Miller, and it is safe to presume that they presented his claims in the strongest and most favorable light. The Times says that Gen. Harrison asked one significant question: Whom did Mr. Piummer regard as the fittest_man_ for a compromise in case he should consider it best not to anger Mr. Platt and his friends by takiag Mr. Miller. “Cornelius N. Bliss,” promptly replied Mr. Plummer. Gen. Harrison Tpmire particu- larly about Mr. Bliss, and Mr.°Plummer de- scribed his services as chairmatiof the Repub- lican_ State Committee. as a v: resident of the Union League club, and as an active mem- ber of the Dry Goods Harrisoh and Morton oe and his ability and standing as a mer- chant. THE SOUTHERN QUESTION. The Tribune says that Mr. Bateman also talked to Gen. Harrison upon the southern question, and quotes him as follows: “The south has just had its first taste of ma- terial prosperity, and that taste has acted as a wonderful stimulus to the growth of republi- can, and more especially protectionist, ideas. The whole business element in the south is na- turally attracted to republican doctrines. It has nothing in common with the old Bourbon democracy except prejudice, but that is disap- pearing before the industrial progress of the south in recent years, und all that is necessary to attach the business and manufacturing interest. permanently to the republican party is a liberal and conciliatory policy in the distribution of fede- ral patronage. I told Gen. Harrison that if the offices were given to republicans of high char- acter and respectability all over the south, and the race question thus forced in the b: ground, the solid south could easily be broken under his administration. The Birmingham movement is an opening wedge, and if. itis guided wisely it will make a disastrous break in the ranks of the southern bourbonism, I look for a new and invigorated re blicanism: in the south in the next four years, ‘The situ- ation there is ripe for it.” IN BEHALF OF MR, PLATT. Scarcely had Messrs, Plummer and Bateman in favor of Mr. Platt arrived. It consisted of ex-State Senator Arkell, his son, W. J. Arkell, owner of Judge, and John A. Sleicher, editor on the Albany Journal, With them also was Gillam, th ‘toonist of Judge. To the Times correspondent after the interview Mr, Arkell said: “You can say that we are Batisfied. REPRESENTATIVE BOUTELLE'S VIEWS, The World's Washington correspondent has interviewed Representative Boutelle upon the cabinet rumors, and quotes that gentleman as saying: ‘There is nothing more certain than that James G, Blaine will be Secretary of State in Harrison's inet. I dou’t think Mr. Blaine is looking for a job of any kind, His friends have not yet begun to think of taking up a col- lection for him, but, whether he is desirous of ee it or not, I have no doubt that Mr. ne's position during the next four one, approaching ae years, and the other ; ars will be that of Secretary of State. not half that age. Before reaching his conclusions the President-elect requires to consult some people, and as promptly as consultations are held the newspapers will find out what they mean, For some time before the 5th of March, 1881 it was understood in a general way that Bla was to be Secretary of State, but even on th y ‘ation it was not known positi y how Garfield's cabinet. would be compo: Indeed, there were places in the cabinet for which Garfield himself had not definitely made his selection.
