One of the most elegant receptions of the season was given by Senator Voorhees and Miss Voorhees at their residence last evening in honor of Delegate Charles S. Voorhees and his bride. The drawitig-rooms were adorned with plants, and the mantels banked with flowers, and the doorways festooned with ropes of smilax. Mrs. J. L. French is detained for the winter at the home of her father in Peru, N.Y. She was summoned thither in July last by the seri- ous illness of her only sister, Miss M. Hattie Chamnell, who in former years spent two or three winters with her in Washington. The sister was taken to mere and there sub- mitted to a severe surgieal operation as the last hope of relief, but died seven days after the operation. Mrs. French will remain for a time to preside over the home of her father, who was left entirely alone by this sad be- reavement.
