But don’t it injure their business otherwise if the fact becomes known that they sell liquor in this way?” “Certainly it does, I know drug-stores where very little prescription business is done because it is known that they sell liquor by the drink. And some of these stores once enjoyed a refutation. Sometimes the clerks are at fault. They will sell the liquor when the proprietor is not about, and I have known cases where bos clerks would close up the store at the hour and then take a few friends into the back room and drink w! y = play poker all night, But this sort thing will break up any drug-store ot < the run. gist has to be very ular in order keep ap reputation. The talk in Baltimore is that the new presi- dent of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, Mr. Mayer, will make sweeping changes in the higher offices when he takes hold. A dispatch to the Philadelphia Press says: C. K. Lord, who was promoted from general passenger agent to third vice-president by President Spencer, is likely to retain his office. There is talk of the return of ex-Vice-President Thos. M. King to the qompeny in the position of first vice-president, in event one of the vice- — mts may be dispensed with. Lord Armstrong in Nineteenth Century. Knowledge is not even an aid to power in all cases, seeing that useless knowledge, which is no uncommon article in our popular schools, has no relation to power. The true source of power is the originative action of the mind which we see exhibited in the daily incidents of life, as well as in matters of the ge im- portance. The man who is said to extri- cated a little dog from the jaws of a big one by 1 Dose dextrously placing a pinch of ‘pepe bey of the larger animal exercised an act of power by his mental resource, tided only by by 1 his cour- age and dexterity. SIGNIFICANT RESOLUTIONS OF THE UNION LEAGUE CLUB A? ITS MERTIN® LAST WIGHT—WILLIAM WALTER PHELPS MAY GO TO INDIANAPOLIS IN ‘MR, BLAINE’S BERALY. The political atmosphere about Indianapolis must be very dense, for the rumors that come out of it are vague and though there are many of them. The meeting of the Presi- dent and Vice-President-elect has excited new interest in the factional quarrel in New York, for it is believed that Mr. Morton will lend his influence in behalf of Mr. Platt’s ambition to be Secretary of the Treasury. Platt, it is also claimed, has the support of the active working | m. element of the party in the state, and also the best men in the republican national committee, headed by Senator Quay. Warner Miller, on the other hand, can count on the influence of the Methodist church, the business interests, and the respectable portion of the republican At the meeting of the Union League club in New York last night Mr. Platt was sat down upon without being specifically mentioned by name in the following resolution, which, ac- cording to the New York Times, ‘‘was adopted bya = jority which was so large that it was Promptly made unanimous:” That we have an giaen faith in the capacity and purpose of the Prealdent-elect to select his own cabinet regardless of all at- tempts at dictation or im; ‘unity from any piarter, and to surround hhigaeelf with constitu- ional advisers who shall be men of large ca- Pavity of spot ess | aso character, and of fast devotion those principles which hve jignalized and vindicated in his own elec- tion, and we earnestly deprecate the studied efforts which are aoe | made with undisguised Pre nim to force bis hand and to put upon him clamorous applicants for places in his cabinet upon the ground of alleged partisan 3 or uniary contributions or loca! control. ‘That such considerations constitute | fon ehelpwented,) BURNERS, no claims to these high and responsible a Pointments upon wkich the success of the in- paren | Gpeeergneney depends, and we warmly — : eagninst the Sun says int re ference to this resolution: It on be noticed thatno mention is made of either Platt or Miller’s name, but after the vociferous applause with which the resolution was greeted, Clinton B. BLAINE for the position of Secretary of State is being | the subject of much comment now, and the | New York Sun to-day, in an interview with a “republican statesman,” quotes that individual as speaking as follows: sine isthe leader of the party. He will insist on being Secretary of State. The general knows that to make him premier is to overshadow himself and make his iminia- tration the administration of Mr. Blaine. On the other hand, Mr. Blaine knows that his leadership depends on his being successful in this spirited and plucky battle to force a Presi- dent to obey him. He has a strong supvort to Washingtca ‘and let the general and the country see that he isin battle array for the plece. “Do i22, know what Gen. The greatest interest is manifested in the expected visit of Senator Quay to the home of Gen. Harrison. The Senator wrs in Philadel. ‘anamaker and a few others, went to Har- risburg. The Philadelphia Press says: “It is understood Col. Quay will go to Indianapolis early next week tosee President-elect Harri- son. He will probably go west direct from Philadelphia, the prospect being that he will remain in this city, after his return from Har- risburg, over Sunday. Whether he will on the occasion of this visit to Gen. Harrison submit the name of Mr. Wanamaker for Postmaster- General or not is geese! nobody pretends to be able to answer. meen opinion is that he will present ‘the Philadelphian’s name for Gen. Harrison's house, in which he saic “Tara certain that Gen. Harrison intends to make the southern question the dominant question of his admi: tion. He will discuss it in bis inaugural address, and he will com- mend it to the attention of Congress at an early stage of his incumbency. Gen. Harrison believes that the democratic supremacy in the south is maintained by fraud, and that means must be adopted by the national government to put it down. Gen. Harrison knows that the southern question is a very complicated and delicate one, but he is determined that the colored people shall enjoy the rights which the constitution has conferred upon them. come what may. While I was at his house to-day Gen. Harrison called my attention to a long editorial in the Indianapolis Journal setting forth the frauds which were committed by the democrats in Georgia at the eae election, and which prove that the scats of all ten of the democratic Congressmen in that state were wrongfully obtained, Gen. Harrison intends to have the elections in the south as free and fair as the elections in the north.” MAHONE MEN HOLDING A SECRET CONFERENCE. Mahone is not in attendance upon the gathering. Those in a position to know are dumb as to the object of the confer- ence, but it is said to be to prepare a paper of some kind to be sent at once to President-elect Harrison, indorsing Gen.
