Mr. O’Brien, is a democrat, and Boston is naturally a democratic city; but he is also of Irish blood and a Roman Catholic, Mr. Bates, his successful competitor, is a re- publican, but an American and a rigid Protest- ant. Some time ago the races and the sects had a brief, sharp struggle over the management of the public schools, and the foreign and Ro- man Catholic element were victorious. Yester- day the Protestant women of Boston turned out in full force, and not only voted in the republican school ticket almost complete, but, by their counsel and encouragement, gave great aid to the republican general ticket. This added to the other anti-O’Brien condi- tions, brought about the result. ——$— Congress should act promptly upon the in- formation furnished by Commissioner Ray- mond’s report on the subject of underground wires in the District. Steele Mackaye, in a moment of confiding candor the other day, stated to a Boston re- porter his opinion that “‘a stage manager can easily estimate the intelligence of a community from the capacity of the supers in its theaters,” and shortly thereafter let drop the remark: “At Washington I labored with the very stupidest set of auxiliaries that ever worried a manager.” This is hard on Washington; but, then, 1t must be remembered that the best society of the capital city has some other use for its evenings than hiring itself out for the “soldiers, citizens, ete.” who are huddled to- gether at the bottom of the cast on the play- bills. Perhaps Mr. Mackaye expected to pick up a Senator or two anda handful of Repre- sentatives, with possibly a Justice of the Su- preme Court thrown in to make good weight. It is too bad that he should have been disap- pointed. Perhaps, the next time he comes some of the great digniteries of the present may be out of a job; im which case by the offer of sufficient inducements, the censorious man- ager will possibly be able to induce them to don the buskin for one week only. _a12-¢0 MARKED-DOWN PRICES OF DRESS GOODS, Owing tothe unusnal amount of warm weather we find ourselves with a larger stock of WINTER DRESS GOODS and SILKS than we care to have at this season. Real INDIA TABLE COVERS at low prices, $$ Women’s rights have taken ona new phase in central New York, where the female under- graduates at Syracuse university the other day took part in the annual class “rush” between the sophomores and freshmen. It is almost needless to say that they were treated with dainty respect by the male combatants, who neither tore their clothing nor trampled them under foot as is commonly done when the rush is confined to the sterner sex. The girls were exclusively on the sophomore side; and it is said that the freshmen, who marched very bravely to the battlefield, were so disconcerted at the discovery of whom they jad to fight, that thay turned and incontinently fied, while the damsels gave chase, It is evident that the fleeing youngsters were freshmen in a double sense. When their freshness has somewhat worn away they will not be apt to run from a pretty feminine pursuer. $e The perennial proposition to establish a board of audit to p.ss upon improvement clvims against the District comes to the front, and agaifst it the Commissioners urge the cus- tomary time-honored, but sound objections, ers W. The most unfor- tunate phase of the recent riot was, of course, the killing and wounding of a few respectable citizens who were so unfortunate as to have mingled with the mob which swarmed about the jail door the other night. The serious question now raised as to the guilt of the sup- posed murderer emphasizes the evil of acting upon impulse in such a case as this. The mob, who conceived that a second murder could in some way compensate for a first, proposed to take Hawes out of his cell and hang him with- out an hour's trial. The sheriff did his duty in defending the prisoner whom the law had placed in his custody, even at the cost of blood- shed. Wherever there isasheriff who dares take the responsibility of doing his duty, and a governor who does not hesitate to back up the sheriff with all the powers at his command, mob violence must be at a discount. —————— Monday, the first District day in the House this session, was well spent in passing the Dis- trict appropriation bill. Washington will be grateful if even half of the remaining days as- signed ber this session are as industriously util- ized in considering her affairs and in legislat- ing for her benefit. Ss Yesterday's proceedings in Court, in the case of the young man calling himself Brown, show that the judicial machinery of the District can be made to work fast on occasion. It is a pity that a beautiful woman could not ia some way be involved in most of the cases, if it is to have the effect of expediting justice in this way.
