Sworn to and subscribed before me this Nimeteenth day of November, A. D. 1883. Joux T. ©. Crank, Notary Public. RE ‘The democrats have made a great mistake in their treatment of the northwestern territories which are in condition to become states. Their entrance into the union has been persistently blocked. Dakota is a specimen case. The ter- ritory has the population and resources to make two states, and its people, including the local democrats until recently when the national leaders of that party interfered, have favored division. Opposing division on partisan grounds the democratic House has postponed admission in any shape. Long before the re- cent election Dakota lost all hope of admission under a democratic administration. It raised a substantial republican campaign fund for the use of the national committee. It sent speak- ers into various doubtful states, or states sup- posed to be doubtful. The northwestern states which peopled it and for whose business houses it furnishes thousands of customers sympathized with it, when the claim was made that the solid south, controlling the democracy, would permit the admission of nonew northern state, no matter what its population and re- sources. The result is seen in the voting of the northwest, in the territories whose faith in the democratic party has been shaken and in the neighboring states to which their appeals have been mainly addressed. Dakota. of course, remains republican. Idaho has doubled its re- publican majority. Montana is reported as electing s republican in place of a democratic delegate, with a republican gain of 8,000 votes. Washington changes a democratic, plurality of over 2,000 to a republican plurality of 5,000. Minnesota, Wisconsin, higan, and Towa, in spite of the desperate fight made in them by the democrats, tell a similar story. The folly of thus inviting discomfiture in the northwest is emphasized by the fact that no other section of the republic furnishes a more promising field for successful democratic labor on the revenue-reform issue. These new com- munities, establishing their manufactures as rapidly as there is demand for them, in the face of a free-trade competition with the old factories and cheaper labor of the eastern states, are not much impressed by the sug- gestion of danger to themselves from the com- petition of other factories whose products must eross the ocean, as well as more than half the continent, to reach them; nor is the manufacturing element as yet the strongest in these communities. On the direct issue between a high protective tariff and one for revenue only the decision of the \ northwest may at least be classed as doubtful. ‘The democracy have alienated instead of con- ciliating this promising field. ————————— ‘The New York Sun has started a story, that will probably run the round of the press, tell- ing why the hands on all dummy clocks used for jewelers’ and watch makers’ signs point to twenty minutes past eight. Briefly it is that the principal maker of these devices in New York was working on one on the evening of April 14, 1865, up to which time he had painted the hands in any position that might happen. But we will let him tell the story in his own words, as follows: “Iwas working on a sign for Jeweller Adams, no used to Keep on Broadway, opposite Stewart's, atthe time. I was making a great clock to hang outside. Adams came running in while I was at ‘Work. He was astrong Lincoln man. He said: “*Potnt those bands at the hour Lincoln was shot, that the deed may never be forgotten.’ “T painted the “net therefore, at eighteen min- idea struck me forcibly, and 1 wrew all my stencils away Sud made new once for ‘that hour. Whether or not all sign clocks have their hands at the hour and minute indicated we do not know; but if they do the reason assigned isnot the true one. Unfortunately for the story Mr. Lincoln was shot at exactly half past ten o'clock. In this connection a fact in relation to the death of Washington, not generally known, may be stated. The day after his death the cloek in the Masonic lodge in Alexandria, of which he was a member, was set at the hour and minute of his demise. Then the clock was stopped, and it has never been permitted to ran nor have the hands been moved since. Much complaint is said to have been uttered by the passengers of the Etruria because the steamer waa kept at her highest speed while passing through a seven days’ storm of terrific force, including what is believed to have been @ tidal wave. This seems an unreasonable sort of grumbling. Nothing is gained, in either comfort or safety, by slackening the speed of ‘& vessel ploughing through such sens. Indeed, Provided she is sea-tight and sdundly built, the faster she can go the better, if she iseither facing the storm or cutting across it. The policy which carried the steamer through its trouble as quickly as possible furnishes no cause for fault finding. $$ Lord) Sackville’s personal effects, as cata- logued for auction purposes, embrace some works on etiquette, but no mention is made of & “complete letter-writer.” a Keely has been locked up for refusing to dis- close his motor secret. WE PRODUCE BELOW A COPY OF A LETTER RECEIVED BY US FROM MESSRS. BATCHELDER & LINCOLN, BOSTON, MASS., TOGETHER WITH OUR REPLY. WE DEEM IT BUT JUSTICE TO OURSELVES THAT THIS CORRESPONDENCE SHOULD BE MADE PUBLIC: BATCHELDER & LINCOLN, BOSTON. Bostox, Mass., November 8, 1888. Messra. Saks & Co.: Yours of November 6,with order, received. Will say we have had some trade from your house, for which we are very much obliged. But wecannot continue it. You may not be aware that ours is s very conservative trade. ‘We have, in order to build it up, refused such large houses as yours, who advertise to sell lower and mark goods plainly in the window at Jess than a living profit or (what other stores claim is.) ‘Do not think this @ criticism on your ways, but take it as a reason why we cannot continue. ‘We blame Mr. Tuttle, as he knew the business could not be continued, and ought not to have opened it. If you have any of our goods that will “stick” from not continuing please write us slist and we will advise farther with you concerning them. Very truly yours, BATCHELDER & LINCOLN. OFFICE OF 8SAKS AND COMPANY, Wasurxotox, D. C., Nov. 12, 1888. MESSRS, BATCHELDER & LINCOLN. Boston, Mase: Dear Stes: In reply to your letter of the Sth instant, we beg leave to say that while we regret the severance of our business relations, we are Blad to know that it 4s caused solely by the fact that we “advertise to sell lower and mark goods Plainly in the window at less than s living pro- Att, or what other dealers claim is." We are also pleased that you do not wish us to take the above “as a criticism on our way of doing trade.” Our customers rather like our ‘way of selling goods, and we consider the price ‘we ask for your goods all they are worth, as we are selling other shoes as good as yours for the same price, aud we could not consistently charge more for yours. The profit we add is amply sufficient to satisfy Us and to enable us to pay you and others one hundred cents on the dollar, as we have always one, and will continue to do. If our competitors do uot like these prices we are glad of it. We reserve the right to sell shoes that we have purchased for any profit we may deem best. You put the wholesale price on your goods without consulting your competitors and we propose to do the same thing. If we have any goods of yours that “stick,” ‘we will do with them as with other “stickers,” mark them down so far below cost that they will ‘be good purchases for the public to make, and ‘we are able to stand the loss, Very truly yours, SAKS AND COMPANY.
