4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: Patgn politics, with its upon padlie attention, is out of date. The op- portunity is now giving to quit talking politics fora while, and to give one’s thoughts and efforts to something else. - There are, for example, a good many things about Washington that need attention. First of all, instead of wasting more time and breath in telling what might have been, if something else hadn't happened, citizens might see if ‘canes aa - up a “boom” for the general the town, which has been rather dull, of hosted ere interest and energy. Next, they might take fora theme the advantages of Washington as a place of and a point for the investment of capital, illustrating the subject by a few strik- img examples of the rapidly increasing value of real estaje in the city and vicinity. Then a Metle sarplus eloquence might be worked off to | 20c. geod purpose on the District Commissioners, with the view of getting better side-walk pave- ments throughout the city, and especially oa, of the streets most frequented by and which are now in a condition ‘that is at once disgracefal to the District gov- ernment end dangerous to those who are com- pelled to use them. The triumvirate ought to be to quit riding around in comfort- able fora while, and go afoot, like commgn peoplé, and thus learn some of the greataeceds of the city, about which they now seem to know or care very little. In the same they might be asked if there isn’t somé Way by which people and companies who tear up the streets for various purposes can be compelled to put them in decent condition within a reasonable time, or some time. The inguiry might be squarely put to them whether, as simple citizens of the town, they think the muddy ditch along the north side of Pennsyl- vania avenue is anything less than a public out- rage. Another subject greatly needing attention is the iniquitots building lien law at present in force here, which makes a privileged class of those engaged in certain lines of business, and interYeres with the growth and pros- perity of the city. If from sympathy, interest, judgment, or any other reason, the Com- as at present constituted cannot see its clear torecommend the proposed amend- ment to the law, which will wipe away its op- reasive and unjust provisions without defeat- ing its legitimate purposes, then a change in the composition of that body ought to be in- sisted upon. The welfare of the city and the Tights of the citizen are of more consequence than the special interests of any one man, or any set of men, and should be looked after and preserved accordingly. Then there is another subject in behalf of which every body in Washington ought to join hands and work together without ceasing. «+ That is a better water supply. There is no one thing that stands so much in the way ot the immediate growth of the city, and which so directly affects the comfort of ita, peopie as the present scarcity of water. It may not be amiss, in going along, to spend some breath in. impre- cations upon rascally tunnel contractors, in- competent workmen, corrupt inspectors, and ignorant or careless engineer officers, and to wish them ail safely in the penitentiary in pun- ishment for the great wrong they have done; Dut the main thing is more water? That should be the theme of argument, song, and prayer, ‘until it is secured. An organized effort ought ‘to be made to lay before Congress immediately upon assembling the vital need of prompt and action by that body toward this specitic end. committees, courts of in- airy, and growls in the newspapers, are well enough, in their way, and serve a useful pur- ‘pose; but they leave ont of view or rather fail to directly promote the main issue. What Washington needs to insist upon, and to insist ‘Upor all the time, is a better water 1, with- out delay. Tt can hardly be that united, vigorous and persistent efforts to this result would fail for long. ‘Then the increasing encroachments of rail- ‘way and other corporations upon the rights of ‘the people must be resisted more effectively than they noware. Nothing short of organized effort will accomplish anything in this direction, #0, too, united action would in the end secure a much-needed improvement in the quality of ga0 now supplied in Washington. If the pres- ent monopoly is not willing and cannot be made to furnish it, then relief must be sought in a competing company. It is intolerable that sng community should be imposed upon in thia Tespect as the people of Washington have deen. These and s number of other things which will readily suggest themselves to thoughtful and public-spirited citizens, are far better than politics, for this community, whose city, and to promote the health and comfort of its people. They are certainly worth striving for, earnestly, in season and out of season. Let every one therefore eschew excess of pol- ities for a while, and go to work and keep at work for them with a will, “A long pull, a strong pull, and & pull all together,” will cor. $$$ The citizens who are arranging for the in- suguration of the next President, and indeed ‘the peopie of the city generally, are pleased to find that the Postmaster General will not take } F i uy had been successful in the election. The Secretary of the Interior, from whom permission to use the pension building must be obtained, will undoubtedly Ht | i : ipess. ‘See what we have on the “tapts” for you this week: BLACK SILK SPECIALTIES. ee ee eee ae Faille Francaise, 97i¢e. 21-Incu All-Silk Extra Heavy Amaure, $1.05 per ya. 2tinch “ ed “Surah, 75c. per yard. ‘ce ee Bhadame, 75c. per Si-hach AB Se Retcatery ‘Satin Luxor, $1.10 per mammoth kind.
