THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: a = = CROSBY S. NOYEs.. 1888. Eaitor. ‘The Evening Star has a regular, permanent dena Side daily circulation more than treble that of any other daily paper published t= Washington, and much greater than that of all the other daily papers here added together. From at the present writing New York’s majority for Harrison has settled the Presidential contest, That it was prima- yily the tariff question on which Mr. Cleve- land’s fortunes went to pieces the returns from the interior of the state indicate, Such few counties as held fast to their democratic alle- glance or made gains for the national ticket were those where the local interests —* permanently or temporarily connected with | peerecrryete or, atany rate, not connected with the republican. In Albany the demo- cratic state government has its seat, and, like New York county, its traditions, reaching back to Van Buren’s time, or farther, are generally democratic. Its in- dustries are of a character which depend @biefly on unskilled labor, like iron mills and foundries, canal and river shipping, and the fike. In Chemung Governor Hill makes his home; and, whatever may be said of his gen- érei practices in politica, it is probable that, among his own neighbors, he worked loyally for the national ticket. In Greene and Rock- land counties, again, the bulk of the working are altural laborers in summer and ay ae snes winter. Rensselaer, in which , Troy is situated, has the same class predomi- ‘ nating in its population as Albany. Schoharie is an agricultural county largely, with some railroad interests, and a long-established dem- ccratio record. Seneca has for the most pert a farming and village population, and its heaviest industries are saw- mills, flour-mills, brickyards, tanneries, and malthouses, where a low tariff would con- tribute more to the profit of the proprietors than a high one. Westchester, although not included geographically in the section south of Harlem bridge, belongs there for all political purposes, and may regularly be depended upon to pay her share of tribute to the democratic city of which she is one of the feeders. The interior counties, on the other hand. in which the republicans have made their largest strides forward, are generally those in which the occupations of the people are dependent on the maintenance of a high tariff for profit. Onondaga is the banner county, showing an improvement of 2,400 on her vote of 1884, as testimony to the earnestness with which her salt, tobacco, paper, machinery and agricultural implements interests have striven for the success of the protection ticket. In Ontario there were agri- cultural implements, woolen goods and car- riages to be especially defended from competi- tion; in Cattaraugus, agricultural implements, carriages, furniture, and tin, copper and sheet- iron ware; in Chautauqua, carriages, ma- chinery, saddlery and harness, and paper; in Franklin, pot and pearl ash and iron mines; in Clinton, iron mines, chiefly owned by one set of capitalists, who have always been strong believers in republicanism and protection; in Oswego, starch, steam engines, steam shovels and dredges; in Otsego, agricultural imple- ments, woolen goods, saddlery, carriages and machinery; in St. Lawrence, pot and pearl ash, Wars Your ek rv A 4 UL AA FR oe LF A mY A EL fA Be be AA GE FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8TH. ‘Warm weather, and “Who'll bePresident?” and a Fur “Opening” yesterday. Erie has somewhere near $18,000,000 invested in protected manufactures of various sorts. Dutchess is the home of the republican candidate for Vice-President, and Oneida, the eenter of the great stalwart reyoltof 1884, which has no parallel this year. In most of the cases in the interior of the state where protected industries have swelled the republican vote, the factories are so situated that nothing but a heavy tariff, it is believed, could compensate for the disadvantages of situation, as regards dis- tance from market or tidewater, the cost of transporting the raw materials used, or the like. While, therefore, there is good ground for suspecting trades here and there in which the democratic national ticket was sacrificed to state and local tickets, the evidence generally points to the tariff agitation as having done the most serious work against Mr. Cleveland. ————— Election excitement this year will apparently be shortlived. Each party experienced joy and sorrow last night at different stages of the returns, but to-day the only prominent person- fied emotions are republican confidence and en- thusiasm, which take possession of the streets uncontradicted and unmolested. Hill was chosen, and Cleveland rejected. The saloon-keepers rejoice and mugwumps lament. The interesting question remains to be settled whether Hill’s victory at Cleveland’s expense, which is being attributed to the for- mer’s treachery, will work, as Hill said it would, his political destruction, or will result in his nomination for the presidency in 1892 as the man who can carry New York. ——$— a _ England is obtuse in taking a hint that it is meddlesome in the affairsof nations. Lord Salisbury sees no harm in the advice of Sack- ville to an alleged American citizen of English descent concerning the manner in which he shall vote jn an American election for the best interests of England, provided the advice is marked “private,” and provided he does not afterward talk with the newspaper reporters, en The Scotch court has decided that it has jurisdiction in the libel case of Par- nell against the London Times, Parnell’s as- sault upon the Times will at least be more vigorous and pointed than the Times’ assault, before the parliamentary commission, upon Parnell. oe The returns indicate that the result of the presidential election will be so clearly in favor of the republican candidate that neither the uncertainty and anxiety from the closeness of New York's vote in 1884 nor the excitement and danger from the close electoral vote of 1876 will be experienced. This, at least, isa happy feature of the election. Dakota gives a special hurrah at the result of the election. Harrison was the champion of the inchoate state in the Senate. If the House is also republican, South Dakota will begin to believe that it does not need to figure much longer as merely @ state-expectant. — Grover Cleveland is a very lucky man, but fuck will change some time. If West Virginia elects a democratic legisla- ture, the United States Senate will be tied, with a republican Vice-President casting the decisive vote. The famous Cleveland luck seems to have collapsed when Danicl Lockwood ceased to do the nominating business, According to the reports immense amounts of money for clection purposes were sent by both sides to Indiana. This greedy state gets the money and the presidency, too. Mr. Dana handles a keen ‘butcher knife to- day. By Joining you get the benefit of cash prices and easy payments, ONE DOLLAR PER WEEK.
