4 ° 23, 1888—SIX PAGES. THE EVENING STAR. | Tse Arrexnox WASHINGTO -Gctober 23, 1888. Batter. ‘She Evening Star basa regular. perwaneat bona Sde daily circulation mere thas treble that of any other daily paper publisbed im Washington, and much greater than that 41 all the ether daily papers bere added together. pe SS A prominent and active democrat, who has good opportunities for judging the drift of opinion and tendency of events, both by observation afforded by travel, and intercourse with party leaders, gives to Tus Stax a view of the political situation some- what different from that generally entertained by the more enthusiastic members of his party. AS to the chances of Cleveland carrying any of the sates heretofore counted as reliably repubiican, be regards all claims for such a result as worse than nonsense, and money spent to that end as foolishly thrown away, except possibly in Michi- gan, where he thinks the democrats have a remote hope of success, He regards the carrying of the legislature of Kansas by the democrats and the sending of @ democrat to the Senate from that state aS within the range of possibility, without any chance, however, of Cleveland carrying the state. California, sometimes claimed by the more sanguine democrats, he regards as sure for Harri- ‘son Dy from 20,000 to 25,000. He bases these fig- ‘ures on the largely increased vote in California, due to extensive accessions to her population dur- ing the last four years, mainly from the northern states, nearly all of which will vote the republican ticket, and make the golden state reliably republi- can for many years tocome, Connecticut he cou- cedes to the republicans, by « small but sure majority, while he considers Indiana and New Jer- sey equally certain for Cleveland, but also by small majorities. This makes New York the pivotal state. In his opinion the republicans will come to Harlem bridge with 70,000 plurality, which will be met by democratic plurality in New York city of 57,000; im King’s county (Brooklyn) of 16,000, and tm Queens, Richmond and Suffolk of about 6,000, giving Cleveland the state over Harrison by about 9,000. Hill's plurality he thinks will be very much larger than these figures. ——~<o+—_____. Tt makes a world of difference with any labor question whether the application of its answer 1s to be made in a thickly or a thinly settled coun- try. Wehave shut out the Chinese altogether from the United States. They are admitted into Canada on the payment of a fifty-dollar entrance fee, Here they compete with the ballot-bearing laborer who works on the railways, digs trenches, and carries bricks upaladder. In Canada they displace only women in domestic service as cooks and laundresses and scullions, and the women go into the factories instead, In this country they are disposed to herd together in the hearts of cities, or hire themselves out in gangs for railway Dullding. In Canada they are more on an indi- ‘vidual footing. That is preferable condition in every respect, and accounts in no small measure, probably, for the difference between the Canadian andthe American feeling toward the Chinese. But the time is coming, unless the regular pro- cesses of soctal evolution experience a check not Possible now to foresee, when our northern neigh- Dors will imitate our course, and their visitors ‘from the flowery kingdom wili be voted a nuisance and compelled to either assimilate with the white Population or keep out of the country. —— For once acoroner’s jury has had the courage to speak out and tell the truth about a railroad disaster. That which has been investigating the ‘Mud Run horror on the Lehigh road places tne re- sponsibility upon the engineers of the two locomo- tives attached to the seventh section of the train, for not obeying the signals, and for allowing their ‘train lo approach a station without Deing under control; upon the engineer of the rear locomotive especially, for not applying the air-breaks, which ‘would have been quite practicable; upon the look- out men in both locomotives for failing to warn the engineers of the presence of the danger signals; ‘upon the rear brakeman of the sixth section, for gotag only four hundred feet back to warn the seventh, when he could have gone nearly a half. mile just as well; and upon the conductors of both sections for not seeing to it personally that the ules of the road were carried out. ‘This is a clear statement of the case, certainly, and there 1s nothing now to prevent the grand Jury of the county trom going to work and indict- ng these men for manslaughter. The conductors, ‘though constructively responsible, are perhaps the least to be blamed of any concerned. The conductor of section six could not have assured himself that his brakeman went back far enough ‘Without deserting the train and going back with iim; and the conductor of section seven would have been obliged, under any circumstances, to have trusted to one or the other of his engineers todo what was right without direct supervision, as i was a physical tmposalbility for him to be in ‘the front cab and rear cab at the same moment. But there is no excuse whatever for the two en- gineers of section seven, or their respective look- ‘Outs, or the brakeman of section six Who did only @ small part (of his duty, and committed the ‘wrong voluntarily and deliberately. These men ‘Ought to be made to suffer the penalties of the Jaw, the extreme sentence of all being passed upon ‘the brakeman whose brutal laziness cost so many human beings their lives. a Governor Hill 18 represented as being thoroughly Alive to the significance of the present and to have said that he wanted to succeed or fail with Cleveland, as a re-election to the govern- ship would be valueless to him without te election of a democratic President to accompany it. A corresponding generosity of sentiment is at- ‘tributed to Warner Miller. With all the lesser ob- Stacles removed, and the factions im the city as- serting thelr loyalty, the struggle between the ‘Rational tickets of the two parties in New York State ought to bes very simple sharply outlined matter. —_—_— A new source of danger to the New York demo. rats south of the Harlem river appears as a mere Speck in the sky im the revolt against Boss McLaughlin in Kings county. ‘The Boss’ slate was Deadly cracked at yesterday’s convention, one of his worst enemies being chosen for the frst place on the ticket. In accordance with the ola party Proverb, “the more fight, the more democrats,” ‘this ought to be regarded as a first-rate sign. But, Unfortunately, Mr. McLaughlin is one of those leaders whose zeal for the success of the immediate object he has in hand always over- Fides every other consideration. This was shown ‘When, in 1879, he resolved to drive the late John Kelly out of the leadership of the party, and did Ot even stop at the sacrifice of democratic supre- contestant who tried to break the will of Samuel J. Tilden and prevent the city from getting the Denedit of the splendid free library for which the Statesman bequeathed a fund. This does not settle the case, of course. An appeal will be taken to the general term of the court, and ‘Whichever side is defeated, to the court Peals, On some technicality it 18 possible ‘the case may even yet get into the supreme court of the United States. It is safe to assume that an Detr-at-law who is willing to go into a Might of this Soft will leave no stone un‘urned to possess him- ‘Seif of so magnificent a property, while a city with ‘an enormous treasury to draw on for the expenses of tigation, and a corps of eminent lawyers regu- g larly salaried in its employ, is not going to sit idly Dy and see iteelf robbed by a quibble. ——— MEN'S UNDERWEAR. ‘The Natural Wool Sanitary Undergarments, ‘Various weights, in one and two piece Baits st cleaner In Fine Lambs’ Wool, Derby, Ribbed. ‘Beowa Geshmere our sortient ison nouehe (Of the physicians and the public is invited to DOUGLASS EMULSION OF PURE KORWEGIAN COD LIVER OIL, WITH HYPOPHOSPHITES OF LIME AND SODA, ‘For the relief and cure of COUGHS, COLDS, BRONCHITIS, GENERAL DEBILITY, And nearly all Pulmonary troubles, and if taken in ‘time will arrest the progress of Consumption. ‘made for originality, but a quareates is given of the absolute parity of the medicines used an . the skillfal manner in which they are prepared.
