FROM THE WASHINGTON PRESBYTERY. Rev. Dr. Bittinger presented a report from the Presbytery of Washington city. It stated that there were 33 members of the presbytery and 26 churches within its bounds, of which only two were vacant. The communicants numbered 4,922; theSun- day scnool scholars, 6,554. There were 342 admitted to Membership upon examination. -The contribu- tions amounted to $149,796. During the year the foliowing new members of the bytery were received: Rev. Rev. Henry Branch, from the committee on min- isterial relief, reported that the work had been conducted with great success. The contribution from this synod to the centenary fund was over $20,000, and the contributions to the board were $3,348.84, and the amount drawn out $3,825, ‘The report sugyested that 10 per cent of the salaries Of active wiuisters be set apart yearly for a fund for ministerial relief. Rev. Dr. Proudiit wanted the recommendations adopted seriatim, so that the adoption of this re- Port would not’ be a mere formal matier. He thought that something should be done to see that the beneficiaries of the church were actually cared for. and that the ministers should make this sub- Ject a special one in their churches. He offered as 4p additional resolution that the resolutions be printed together with an uddition showing the dlifereuce between contributions to the and ‘the amount draw for relief and the whole printed. All the resoluuions were adopted, Rev. J. L. Vallandigham, of Newark, presented the report upon the mintites of the general as- sembiy. HOME MISSIOXS, Rev. Dr. Gayley, from the committee on home missions, reported that during the year 170 churches were supported, 1,484 missionaries main- tained, and 10,082 new members were admitted to these mission churches. The amount contributed Yo.the oad, by the synod during the year was $13,555, of which the Presbytery of Baltimore gave . the Presbytery of New Castle $3,353, and Ube Fresbytery of Washington city $4,403. Of the entire umount the women contributed about $5,800. ‘The report recomunended that pew meth- ods be adopted to strengthen the weak chure and suggesied that a missfouary of the sy! might do muca in tnis direction by visiting the Weak cuurches and the mission stations. The re- port recommended that all pastors preach during Uhe year on the cause of home missions, and com mended the enlarged contributions of the Sabbath scuool The work of the women was warily endorsed, and it Was recommended that a synodi- inissiouary be appointed. ev. Mr. Cross, of Baltimore, objected to the word “counsel,” and suggested the substitution of “enjoined.” Some discussion followed, in which the authority of the synod over the ministers was “iter. HA. McLean, of Del di that te laware, thought it if the instruction to the’ ministers Was because the ministers did not know how to preach ou missions, he would advise them to go vest. He (avored giving great prominence in all the churches to this subject. Rev. Dr. Bartlett said that he hoped there would be no qutbble about this matter. He did not believe that tere was any minister Who Was not in favor Of home missions. It there Was such a minister {t Was his opinion that tt would be much better for im lo stop preaching. Finally the resoiution was amended so as to read that the presbyteries enjoin their ministers to present this subject to their congregations at ‘Some Ume during tue Year, and it was ed, ‘The entire report was Uien adopted, AID TO COLLEGES. Noassistance trom this Source had been ree-t¥veu by any church or chapel in the Presbyvery of Washingtoa city. The com- mittee urged more liberai contributions in the Tuture, ‘The report was adopted. 0 WAIT UPON THE PRESIDENT. Rev. Dr. Bartlett suggested that a committee be appointed to ascertain wnen the President can re- ceive the members of the synod, as it was custom- ary to call upon him. The moderator pretaced bis appointment by saying that he would like to know some brethren of democratic prociivities. ‘This created a laugh aud also drew out a from several meuers tual the moderator’s sug- gestion was not a god one, as this body Was Lot Poi ‘The moderator acknowledged the truth of this ¢riticism, and appointed Rev. Mr. Branch, Rev. Mr. Vailandigham aud Judge Strong to wait upon the President and ask him when he can receive the synod to-morrow. THE SIOUX CHIEFS, Dr. Bartlett stated that he had been informed that the Sioux chiefs now in the city intended to come in tus afternoon for the purpose of meeting the members of the synod. He understood that the Indians would come over to the church from the White House, It was informally understood That the synod would receive the Indians. ‘The following were added w the commictee on tem- Derance: Rev.
