The Clese of the Bace-ball Season ‘To-day. BOW THE WASHINGTON'S DEFEATED THR DETROITS— THE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE—WHAT THR CLUBS HAVE DONE DURING THE YEAR—PERSONNEL OF THE HOME ‘TEAM—HOPES FOR NEXT YEAR. ‘The Senators took another game from the De- troit team yesterday by the score of 3to1. This result was accomplished by a bunch of hits in the ‘third inning, and the visitors’ inability to bat with any safety. The batteries were O'Day and Mack, and Gruber and Sutcliffe. O”Day’s was strongest when strong work was needed, and he showed great coolness when men were on bases. In the first inning, with one out, Brouthers made a two- base hit, but in trying to stretch it out intoa triple he was retired. ‘The Statesmen went out in order in the first two innings, but they made a geod spurt in the third and won the game, Wil- mot made a single and was sent around by @ hit by O'Day and Hoy’s grounder to Rowe. Wilmot made a break for the plate, scoring on Sutcliffe’s error in aropping the ball, Then Daily scored O'Day and Hoy by making a fine two-base drive to the fence. In the next inning the home team could not reach first. In the ith, with ODay out, Hoy toot first on balls and second on a ball, Myers was given his base, but Daily flied to White and Sweeny to Han- Jon. "In the visitors’ half, with two out, Brouthers ‘hit safely. White then ‘ined a long, ay to Genter that seemed sure tor two bakes, but Hoy dug bis toes in the ‘aller the ball when it fell, catch. ‘The home sixth, O’Brien bi going over by a couple of f2et. Hise, gotny toe Wilmot was given his ob and O'Day struck oute Rowe's grounder and gave him bis base. The error, however, did not count, as Twitchell struck out, Nicholson ‘was retired on’a lucky foul tip, and Campau Lit to Myers, being easily thrown out at TRE CHAMPIONS’ ONLY SCORB ‘was madein the eighth. Brouthers reached first on balls, and went to second on White’s sacrifice to Puller. The shortstop fumbied the ball so loog ‘that be could not get Brouthers at second, so he Uned tt to O'Brien, ‘The umpire called the Deacon out, but hardly a spectator agreed with him. It wad a most unfortunate decisign, ‘Thea Hows bit, and then over Puller’s head for a bage. Wilmot mude a dive’} to get It on the fly and let it go by him, Brouthers scoring and Rowe taking second. The next two men flied out. ‘The Senators were prevented from Scoring im the ninth only by bard luck. Wilmot made a beautiful bit for two bases. The ground Detng soft and sogzy, the ball did not roll tar and the runner could not make rod time, | Twice he tried to steal third. With Fuller at the bat he made a lunge for the coveted bag, and Fuller foolishly bit at the ball, making a foul, which Sut- ht in the most marvelous manner in one fe then lived it down to Nicholson to catch Wilmot, the runner being declared Once more he tried to get there, was foiled in the attempt, O'Day @ foul tp, on which Wilmot was easily Uurown out at second. In the last halt, after two were out, Gruber made a neat hit dver Myers’ head, and’then Hanion threw away his chances of a hotue run and a ued score by Upping out to Mack, Washington made 6 hits and 5 errors, and Dearie 4 hits aud 2 errors pa ere Were no other League games played, being prevented by rain. Baltimore, 3; Cleveland, 1, Brooklyn, 10; Ath- letic, ‘TUE SITUATION. ‘The victory of yesterday gave the Senators a ttle better chance fora piace. The winning of the coveted position now depends entirely upon the outcome of to-day’s game. If Washington soses all is gone; if Indianapolis wins the result is the same; if Washington wins with In- dianapolls the relative tions of the clubs will Temain unchanged; if Washington wins and In- diaaapolis does not piay the result would be a tie; ‘and, Hnaily, if Washington wins and Indianapolis loses, the long-desired ‘seventh place will velong to the Senators. In View of these facts the chances are sligntly against the home team. But it should be remembered, when this close Unat Washingt ut 18 consider ton threw ‘away atchance to takes ‘THE Past WEEK Deen # good one, as far as the percentage of the home team goes The Statesmen won two out of the four games played. This short rest Seemed to benefit them, for on Thurs- day they handily defeated the Detroits by better Helding and lucky hitting. In the four games played tals week Washington made 20 runs, 3 ts and 23 errors, Lo 30 runs, 42 hits and 16 errors by their opponents. THE RACE THIS YRAR has been unusually interesting. Detroit, the ex- champions, started out with a crippled team and Went to the bottom like a plummet. Chicago, hav- ing lost its best pitcher, held up near the top for a long time. Boston, having gained this pitcher, showed a goud spurt at the remaining in. rst place for three weeks, then dropping to fourth With great rapidity.
