About the last relic of the construction of the ‘Monument fs a long, low, wooden building a short distance to the northeast of the shaft almost hidden by the mound that has been built up around it, This building contains the office of the custodian, and the memorial stones, about thirty in number, that reman to be inserted in the inside walls of the Monument, Bids were opened some Ume ago for the contract of setting these stones, and the award will probably soon be made, ‘THE STONE LODGE BUILDING, in the grounds to the east of the shaft, presents a doleful appearance, the originally white walls be- ing stained almost yellow by the dust that has been stirred up for months by the constantly passing carts and wagons. This dirt, however, will be easily washed off as soon as tite bi and the dirt-hauling are completed. The lodge 1s constructed of the refuse murble from the Munu- ment—pieces of stone that were too snail for the courses of the but are just the thing for such a building.
