Mr. Campbell appeared for the defendant and entered a plea of not guilty. Oflicer John C. Daley, of the second precinct, testified that the defendant has a whole- Sale license. Some days ago witness gave two colored men money and saw them o in the de- fendaut’s place and get something to drink, Wit. ness saw theta pay for the drinks and saw the de- fendant put the money in the drawer. An investigation was made by the general superintendent of the com- pany, Calvin Cone, in Cincinnati. On the theory that the package had been doctored before leaving the bank payment was resisted by the express company, against which suit for the amount was brought ‘in’ the United States court at Toledo. ‘The ‘company was beaien, Judgment against it entered, and the money A year ago Col. John "Byrne, of Buffalo, general detective agent of the express company, became convinced ‘hat the bogus package lad bven substituted for the genuine one at Greenville, Onlo, by Jobn F. ‘Murphy, who, at the tine of the robbery, Was em- ployed asa driver by the United States Express agent at Greenvilie. Murphy lett the employ of the company in June, 1887, under suspicious cir cumstances, and aiter leaving made no effort to ket work, though he was not known to have any means.
