CLARE, jotary Public. ——- ‘The breach between the various democratic Clements in New York ctty is widening every day, and the wedge which drives them apart is the general popularity of Abram 8. Hewitt, The ‘Dusiness community, without regard to party aMilations, is behind him, and 1t remains for the Politicians to decide whether they had better swim With the current or try their luck at beating It Dack. Mr. Hewitt has declared, first, that he does ‘not thirst for another term as mayor, and, second, ‘at he would not under any circumstances ac- cept a nomination from Tammany Hall, which he regards a3 a mere machine for the dispen- Sation of spoils The County democracy, ‘Tammany’s old enemy, thinks strongly of letting citizens’ meeting nominate him and then endors- ing the nomination and getting the glory of suc- ess if no more substantial benefts, But the Question comes up at ouce, whether glory enjoyed Dy itself alone would pay as well asa dividend shared with Tammany Hall. There are at least two men on the county Ist of possibilities ‘who Would be acceptable enough to Tammany It ‘the two halls could combine on them against a Citizens’ ticket with Hewitt’s name on ft, This 1s the situation, and these are the doubts encompassing it, viewed merely as a municipal matter. But a broader question for consideration 13.3 to the effect of the city squabble on the fate Of the democratic national ticket. Harmony is strongly urged by some of the friends of the Ad- ministration, on the ground that Mr. Cleveland ‘Bust Jose votes if the party in New York city ts @ house divided against itself. Tuis argument is Partly founded on error, however. Experience ‘as shown that, in one way, a local Mght may be & good thing for a general ticket, If it does nothing more, it brings out the full strength of ‘the party vote, for each of the contending factions 48 so resolved Lo defeat and rebuke Its adversary What it drums up every man in its ranks who ts able to get to the polls and cast a Dallot; and the grorkers for the general ticket Dave only to be on the alert, aud see that each Voter for the local candidates is supplied with @ general ballot also, tosecure an extraordinarily large voue. Barring out, therefore, the possibility Of “trades” and “deals,” by which dishonest managers may do more or less damage to the ational ticket among the lower class of voters, it is possible that the commotion caused by Mr. Hewitt’s reappearance as a candiaaie, and the Mruggle of the democratic halls to regain the as- cendancy in local politics by respectively support ing or opposing him, may be the best thing that could happen for Mr. Cleveland's chances, while harmony, coupled with apathy, might be the ‘worst. <a ‘There 1s a good deal of secession talk in the Province of Quebec Just at present, accompanted ‘with vague suggestions of annexation to the United States. It is probably the mere overflow of @ temporary fit of vexation, the effect of which ‘Will pass away as suddenly asitappeared. Quebec ‘would, on general grounds, be a desirable territory for us to acquire, if for no other reason than that she commands the mouth of the St. Lawrence Miver. Her people are a thrifty, hard-working Jot, albelt not highly educated or very broad- minded. We have found the French Canadians, however, who have migrated to this country and become mill operatives and market gar- deners in New England to possess some excellent qualities for citizenship of our fepublic; and, doubtless, with the spread of our national ideas and spirit among them as gathered in bulk in Quebec, they could be made into patri- Otic and creditable Americans. It is to be regret- ‘ted that their present outburst has been attended ‘with certain race and religious features which are always dangerous to peace and good order when they become too prominent. The cry of “Quebec for the French” and the declaration freely made by Premier Mercier that certain acts of the Dominion government have sprung from “English Protestant hatred of French Roman Catholics” are unfortu- nate incidents. If Quebec decides to come into our Union it must be with the understanding that her people come not as members of any spectal nationality or ecclesiastical communion, but as Americans pure and simple, ready to biend with our people and live in harmony with them, re- gardless of any difference of ancestry, creed, or other condition. ——————_____ ‘The damage done in south Washington by the miniature cyclone yesterday sugyests the question ‘whether such a home of American science as this eity cannot produce an invention for breaking the foree of these storms. It ts true that we suffer Dut triling annoyance as compared with many communities in the west and southwest; but, if ‘We could escape even what we do get, the deity. erance would be appreciated. The diMculty in applying any preveution consists primarily in the suddenness with whica the storm comes upon a city, and the uncertainty, even when one is expected, of the point at which it will make its first stroke and the course it will take afterward, Bet it seems to be pretty well demonstrated th at Such a disturbance does not begin Inside of a thickly-settled community. That being the case, & city might avert a great deal of damage by encircling itself with preventive apparatus, espe- tally if 1t were discovered that concussion, applied Promptly on the approach of the storm from with- Out, Would break the spiral line in whieh it moves and reduce its character Mr. Thurman says he has not yet written his letter of acceptance, but that he expects to pre- pare it in the course of the present week, and (hat 3 will be brief. It may be remembered that, eight years ago, It Wasa matter of general remar« that the letters of acveptatice of the Vice-presidential candidates Were better than those of their chiefs. Possivly the same surprise is now awaiting us in the cases of Messrs. Thurman and Morton. Brev- ity, certainly, is a virtue in such documents, what- ever others they may or may not possess, —— Harriet Beecher Stowe shows that the ancestral walt, of reluctance to give up a Nght, no matter how heavy the odds on the other side, 1s still strong within her. A few days ago she was car- Fled home to die. On Saturday she walked out Moors, and yesterday partook of her first solid food forfour months. Tue pioneer stock from which ‘she springs has a habit of taking its own time to surrender, even to the Great Couquerer. ———— ‘Most is out with another incendiary circular, in ‘Viting the admirers of Spies, Parsons, Engel, Fischer and Lingg to “cause the trembling of all those ‘Whose hands are stained with the blosd of our Brethren.” The bloodthirsty pamphicteer has Probabiy discovered some new style of bedstead ‘Which he cam crawl under with absolute security against being pulled out by the police. ——— aa One of the unkilied fools made a second attempt ‘wcross the Niagara whirlpool in bis patent life.
