ISSUING ADMISSION TICKETS FOR NEW PUPILS—IN- CREASED ACCOMMODATIONS, TEACHERS CONFER- ‘ENCES, ETC. ‘The public school buildings began to show signs of life to-day after the long vacation. AS carly as 8 0,clock the steady tramp of footsteps were heard through the deserted halls. The voices woke the Echoes of the corridors that have been silent since the closing of the schools last June. From 8 to 10 clock, the principals in the various buildings Were kept busy issuing tickets admitting scholars to the public sehools, which will begin the new ‘School year next Monday morning. They were Rot as busy as they will be to-morrow morning and then again to-morrow afternoon from & Cas o'clock, for, as in everything else, people leave Work of getting school tickets until the ast possible minute. MORE SCHOOL ROOMS. ‘There will be no new buildings to be opened this Year, but there will be additional accommodations. ‘The rent fund has been drawn upon to its fullest extent and new rooms have been rented as fol- lows: | First Division—One room each at 2112 and 2114 14th street; one euch at 1400, and 14003 8 street, and one room for a P street. Second Division—One room at 220 K street for cooking school. Tne entire building at G24 0. street, foF « cooking and mabual training schools, and four rooms at 628 O street for Uonal accommodations for the High School. Third Division—Two rooms at the corner of 8th and I streets northeast. No additional accommodations have been provided in the other divisions, WALP-DAY SCHOOLS. It is expected that the school buildings will be crowded, but perhaps not more than last year. Arrangements will be made so as to limit the num- ber Of hilf-day schools, an expedient which has been adopted to relieve the overcrowded school buildings. It is, however, an expedient that is not in favor with Superintendent Powell, apd he will endeavor Lo have as few as possible. ‘TEACHERS AND PUPILS. ‘The small army of youngsters that will throng the school buildings on Monday next will come under the direction of 693 teachers. Seo cee, cana THE “sQUIRE” WAS ARRESTED. Experience of a Washington Lawyer as = Magistrate on the Virginia side. ‘Mr. Frank P. Closs, an attorney of this city, was some time ago appointed magistrate in Alexan- dria County, Va., and nolds court on the Columbia pike, He bas now learned that the course of Dusi- ness in a “squire’s” court in the county does not always run as smoothly as the business in the office of a Wasbington lawyer. He has not, how- ever, given up his practice tn this city. Tuere 1s @ law in that county prohibiting the firing off of a firearm within 100 feet of a public road. Some days ago @ young man employed as a clerk in Johnson's store on the Columbia pike went three or four hundred yards from the road and discharged a pistol. Business among the col- ored special policemen had been dull lately, and & Warrant Was sworn out for the young man. ‘Magistrate Closs was called upon to take bonds tor his appearance. ‘The magistrates and special po- Heewen held that “squire” Closs did not have authority to accept vail, and wouid not, there- lore, recognize bis action.
