There ‘was a drenching rain and the day began in a most discouraging way. Water streamed down the face Of the sentinel and dripped from the end of his nose. Guard was mounted in the rain and there Was a race through the rain to the hotel for break- fast. Before the bathing hours, however, the sun came out brightly and soon set every one smiling. There was no fixed program for to-day. Col. Moore, Surgeon Leach, Quartermaster Kelly and others Started off on a fishing trip this morning, and to- night wonderful accounts of their adventures and the tremendous fish they caught are being told. The have not yet put the red glow on the town. They believe themselves capabie of tm- ling to it, Sunday they were busy arrai their tents. Last night their attention was occupied by the pretty girls at the bail, but to- night and henceforth the walk and the other resorts of pleasure will resound with tramping feet, with W. The open tents show- ing the tasty decorations within, over which a mellow tint is thrown by a Japanese lantern or some other coiored light, flags floating lazily in the breeze, and soldier boys lounging about in at- Uvudes of blissful rest, and perhaps a sweetheart or two in the fc ind, go to make ing pictures. The soft ‘notes of a gul Vent, the snoring of some tired trooper Sieep in the presence of so much romance, and the murmur of the sea join in the rhythmic melody that ravishes the ear. Col, Moore himself, on dress Parade, ls worth the walk to the parade ground to see. The W. LI. Corps has a great advantage in its commanding officer. When he!s in full panoply, With shako, epauleties, and Austrian cloth coat, standing erect and motionless waiting to receive the report of the adjutant, he looks the very em- bodiment of military glory: His gray moustache and goatee of military cut, his eagle eye and straight, spare igure and martial bearing makes Lis a conspicuous object among ordinary mortals, All the mystic rites of the dress parade are carried out with grim formality anda wonderful precision. TAKING THK TOWN. Last night, after the ball, a squad of the boys, With Shomo as captain and Koginski as drum- major, Went out on an expedition, ‘The band con- sisted of a youth with good lungs and a mouth- organ. ‘The bays helped him out by whistling. ‘They “Marched Through Georgia” abd “Raliied Around the Flag” througu the town, tramping Into every place that was open and’ spreading hilarity. ‘Finally, at the ume the society writers Teter Lo as the “wee sma’ hours,” they charged on the camp, intending to serenadé the colonel. The alarm was given, and the guard hastened out. ‘The guard was at ‘Arst d:spoyed to jolu the revel- ers, Dut the sense of responsiblity prevailed, and they put the whole squad under arrest’ and tarched the culprits into camp. ATLANTIC CITY'S HARVEST. Mr. Gea W. Pearson, wuo 1s here, has been taking a practical view of things, He has found tat Atlantic City has 5,500 houses. Dr. Leach judged trom its teeth that 41 was @ hundred years old—old enough to vote before Atlantic City was discov. ered.
