THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C.. WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 1888 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ..Jualy 11, 1885. Six states will hold thetr own elections prior to ‘the general polling in November which Is to cide the fate of the presidency. Teanessee and Alabama lead the procession next month, the one ‘on the second and the other on the sixth, and both, 18 1s commonly Delteved, may be conceded to the democrats in advance. Arkansas follows on the third of September, Vermont on the fourth, and Maine on the tenth. Georgia closes the list with an election on the third of October. Of the last four the democrats expect to elect their tickets tn Arkansas and Georgia, and the repubiicans in Vermont and Maine. The only recent presidential year when either of these has disappointed expectations was in 1580, when the fusion of Gemocrats and greenbackers in Maine elected Barris M. Plaisted governor, and drew from Gen- eral Hancock a hasty message of congratulation, which hurt his cause all over the West and East- ern and Middie states. The present condition of ‘Uaings Is much more wholesome, politically, than that which prevailed afew years agu, W! ohio and Indiana were “October states,” and suMctently close to make their returns significant Both parties were then tempted to throw their bardest, ‘and often their most unscrupulous, work into that Fegion. ‘The American party which ts to furnish the great political issue and sweep the country when the tariff and liquor questions are disposed of will meet in convention at Washington next month to put in the eld a presidential ticket. Washington ‘will then have been the scene of the presidential | nominating conventions of two of the political | parties, and will nave furnished the candidate at | ‘the head of the tiexet to another. No city could | ‘De a more appropriate meeting ground for a body of citizens who pride themselves on their ais- {inctively American character, antecedents, and Aspirations than the one founded by, and named for, George Washington, and whose chief citizen, ‘since the beginning of the century, has been, without exception, & native of the United States. | << ——_— ‘The aeceased wife's sister controversy has ‘broken out afresh in England, and Mr. Labouchere has made an interesting contribution to it by the inquiry why, if the established church insists ‘What her male children shall follow the Mosate law forbidding marriage with a deceased wite's sister, she should not equally enforce the Mosaic law commanding a man, Whether single or already married, to take to wife the childless widow of his Drother. This 1s, of course, on the assumption that the rule rests alone on the scriptural prece- dent, and not on any independent consideration of social expediency; but it 18 an interesting sug- gestion, in eitner event. ———————————— John Zachar, the Wisconsin faster, claims to have gone without food for itty days. This state- meat, if 1t could be proved, would raise him one degre higher than Dr. Tanner, whose fast in 1880 attracted world-wide notice. But, unfortunately, he has wasted this experiment, for he has not sur- Founded it with those safeguards which alone make it of any value to science, as Tanner did his, What comfort there can be toa man in starving himself to a skeleton, shriveling is skin, and oe Naa AL“Sricker- ‘THEREFORE, “LET ‘ER FLICKER.” FLY WEIGHTS. This is a heavy Durden for the English surgeon to carry, for, unex- plained, it convicts him either of a serious lack of ‘Skill in dlagnosis or of intriguing for the purpose of decetfing the imperial household a8 to the nature Of the disease. But Dr. Mackenzie will doubtless have something to say in reply. _—<—<—<—— We observe inthe New York Sun of yesterday an interesting article on the summer dress of statesmen in Congress, credited to the Cincinnat! Commercial Gazette. This leads to the farther observation that if the exchange editor of the Sun ‘were as vigilant and conscientious as he ought to De he would have printed it at least one day earller im the Sun, properly credited to the Wasutxoron ‘EVENING Stak, Where it originally appeared on Saturday, (reaching New York on Sunday morn- ng), instead of waiting until Monday for the Cincinnati papers containing it, and which, by ‘the way, gave proper credit.
