PAUL’S DEATH. Joseph M. Chase on Trial for Man- slaughter. In the Criminal Couri, yesterday, the trial of Joseph M. Chase for manslaughter in causing the Geath of Prof. & A. Paul, dh March 31 last, by Tecklessly driving into him and his bicycle, was continued after Tue Stax’s report closed. Mr. Lipscomb, for the Government, said he thought ue would be able to show that the killing Was the resuli of the reckless driving of Chase. Mr. Wail claimed that they would show that the Killing was tue result of accident. ‘The first wituess was Wim. Robinson who testified “to se Chase ride idly | up and down the college hill, like he was on a race track. When witness saw the horse afverward It was covered with dust as if he had been down. John W. Coyle testified to the plot of the locality and that west of the railroad track there was 4 feet of clear roadway and on the east over 10 feet of roadway. The grade of the college hill 1s 4.2 inches per 100 feet. Daniel Dicainson testified to seeing Chase riding the horse on the west side of the street, When he first saw Mr. Paul he was next to the car track and then he crossed the street aud was Tiding on the edge of the stone gutter. Mr. Lipscomb summed up for the Government, Saying Le would not allude to the cotton-tieid pre- Judices. ‘The shocking barbarity and atrocity of ihe offense aroused the indignation of the wit- nesses, and this accounted for the feeling. Claim- ing tat the Government had made out a case he elused at 12:10 0'clock. JUDGE MONTGOMERY'S CHARGE TO THE JURY. Judge Montgomery charged the jury, first deftn- ing manslaughter and noting the theories of each side, It was agreed, he said, that there was no in- tens, for had tuere Been the charge would have been murder. ‘The simple question for the jury Was, Whether the act Of the defendant was reck- less’ and careless. ‘They should inquire as to the Tate of speed—Whether it Was a prudent or a reck- less galt, A VERDICT OF GUILTY. ‘The jury were out about an hour and returned a verdict of guilty.
