A THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: THURSDAY Sune 25, 1588. CROSBY 5, NOYES. ‘Ibe Evening Star bas a regular, permanent bona fide daily circulation mere than treble that of any other daily paper publisbed in Washington, and much greater than that ef ali the other daily papers bere added together. What Induces the great parties nowadays to pominate their young, healthy, vigorous men for President, and give the Vice-Presidential nomina- tions to veterans Whose age creates a presumption against thetr surviving their chiefs? It seems as ir every logical consideration would reverse this order of things. The only object of having a vice- president at ail 1s to provide against the contin- geney of the death or the disability of the Presi- dent. ‘This would make it natural to put the can- didate having the worse expectations of life at the top of the ticket and the one having the better at the bottom, Yet Grant at his second nomination was ten years younger than Wilson; Hayes was three yearsyounger than Wheeler; Garfield was one Year younger than Arthur; Hancock was two years younger than English; Blaine was four years younger than Logan; Cleveland was eighteen years younger than Hendricks, and 1s twenty-four years younger than Thurman; and Harrison is nine years younger than Morton. The only exceptions Yo the rule since the war have been Grant's seniority of one year over Colfax, Seymour's of eleven over Blair, Greeley’s of fifteen years over Brown, and Tilden’ of five years over Hendricks. From this it would appear that the American peo- ple prefer the illogical to the logical arrangement; as, in this whole list of cases where the candidate for President has been older than bis companion on the ticket, only one has been seated in the White House, and the difference in his favor was Dut a single year. ———— Theatrical people will generally agree that Miss ‘Mather bas madea serious mistake in commencing law proceedings against Mr. Hill, her former manager, to secure the settlement of some differ- ences existing between them. The testimony in the case is decidedly interesting in its way, but hardly pleasant reading for either the profession of the public. Mr. Hill was,in theatrical par- Janee, the “discoverer” of the dramatic prodigy, as she Was termed in the beginning of her career, and his testimony afforded a racy Insight into the manner in which theatrical stars are “boomed” and the public led to believe they are a distinct success, both professionally and financially, while imfact they are dismal fatlures as actors, and playing continuously to losing houses, Of all dirty linen that of the stage nad better be deodor- ized in private, and the case of Mather v, Hill is a fresh and foreibie illustration of the old truth, $a Lord Dufferin has had a good deal of travelling to dosince he left Canada. He is now talking of leav- ing Rome at the end of six months and going to Constantinople. Party politics makes little differ- ence, in the British service, with the diplomatic career of a man of Dufferin’s ability. Whenever ‘a delicate piece of business 1s to be looked after, there he 1s sent to attend to it, whether the gov- ernmentof the day be radical or tory. Here is a particular in which, in spite of all our boasted American progress, we might copy the ol4-fash- Joned mother country with advantage. —<—$<—$<$<——— ‘The Senate has done its duty, as far as it now can, for the health and comfort of Washington, by juserting im the river and harbor bill an appropri- ation for improving the Potomac opposite the city. ‘There may be a struggle over this clause in con- ference committee, but the Senate ought to pre- ‘vail, and doubtless will, if 1t insist. The appro- priation has every consideration in its favor, and ‘very few Representatives will oppose it to the ex- tent of endangering the river and harbor bill, << What has become of the Ohio prophet who dreamed that McKinley was to be tae nominee at Chicago, zdeclaring that the nomination of two ‘other candidates had been revealed to him in ad- ‘ance in the same way. Has he gone into hishole, like the ground hog? He ought to submit himself to the irrepressible interviewer, and explain why ‘things didn’t come out according to contract. ————————— ‘The Inconsistencies and causes of embarrass. ment found in the school appropriation bill, to ‘which frequent reference has been made in TaE Stam, Will soon be considered by a conference committee. It 1s earnestly hoped by the public that this legislation may in the end be moulded ‘Anto satisfactory shape. —_—————— All the men who drew prizes in Chicago are not having their biographies printed in the papers just now. There is a widespread suspicion, for in- stance, that, if the tide of politics should turn in favor of the repubiicans next fall, President Harrison's first message to the Fifty-first Congress will be read im the House by order of Speaker MeKinley. —— + = ny Ee = mW Eh Bae GAINS BY THE HUNDREDS.
