At the meeting of the school board last night the petition sent to the Commissioners by Rev. Teunis S. Haraiin, M. W. Galt, James E Fitch and others, Urging that the opening of the schools be deterred "nul the frst Tuesday in October, came bvfore the doard for action. Mr, Fish suggested that while it might be true ‘that the schools did not now get fairly at work be- fore October 1, if the opening was delayed until the time proposed they would not get to work be- fore the middle of October. The question to him was whether to accommo- date those ‘who were abie to go away and stay away during the month of September they Should deprive those who were here or the benefit Of schools during that time. In his part of the city ‘he Was sure citizens would oppose such a delay. Mr. Ross said he believed the pubilc schools were hot Spend the summer out of town. ‘The 13, as Tule, were glad to have thelr children at School. Hie thougat they should legislate for that class." If he were to make a change, suortening tue school Year, it would be by cutting off at the other end, closing earlier. In other Jurisdictions, he said, the schools Were opened earlier than 10 Washington. After some discussion a motion by Mr. Fish, f'x— ing the 17th of September, the day provided by the rules as the date for opening the schools, was carried. ‘THE PENDING APPROPRIATION BILL. Last night was the time when, according to cus- tom, the teachers for the ensuing year were to be nominated. Owing, however, to the delay in the Passage of the District appropriation bill the Teachers to be employed next year could not. be designated, It was arranged to have an early meetiug after the of the Dill so as to make the nominations. Mr. Fish called attention to several provisions in the pending bill relating to the ‘salaries of teachers which, tn his opinion, might cause serious embarrassment. These pro- visions were those forbidding diserimination be- tween male and female sulartes, relating to the salaries of principals of normal ‘schools, and for- bidding increases in salaries of teachers receiving $000 or more, or increasing the number of teachers in ‘grades receiving §900 or more. Mr, Fish maintained that ~ these visions were. inconsistent with one another. ‘There were male teachers principals of schools receiving $1,200 or more, while female teachers Were receiving but $1,000. Such a distinction Would ve forbidden, and at the same time they were forbidden to either Increase the salaries of the females or reduce those of the males, as they could not increase the number of teacuers in any one class. He spoke of other embarrassiuents likely to arise, and it was fnaily decided that Messrs. Ross, Fish, and Francis sould endeavor to secure an aualence witu the conference committee on the fect. They play three games there— Friday, Saturday and Monday. They will be doing ali that their patronsat home could expect if they get one, and the growlers at home should not be disgruntled if they do not get any, for New York has a particular spite on the Senators for having gone there on the 7th of this month and winnlug the postponed game of May 26. It wes an un- gracious act for Which Mutrie has not forgiven the club, and the Glants will undoubtedly do their best to take Unree straight. Still, the prospect is yet bright for winning at least seven of the nineteen games to be played away from home, and if they do that everybody ought to ve satisti In speaking of Monday's game the Pilladelphia Press says: The Wasuingtons bunched thelr hits beautitully to-day and defeated Boston. Bread, biscuit and cake, now generally made by the aid of baking powder, enter so largely into our daily food that their debasement by the introduction of any inju- rious or deteriorating substance is a matter of serious concern to the public health, What baking powder shall we use to avoid the lime and alum now found in so many leavening agents, and to insure pure, sweet and wholesome bread, is a question, therefore, of direct importance to every individual. The ‘Royal’? has been determined by the Govern- ment chemists and the most prominent food analysts to be the only baking powder made that is entirely free from lime, alum and other impurities, and absolutely pure. It is made from cream of tartar refined for its exclusive use by patent processes by which the tartrate of lime is totally eliminated. No other baking powder manufacturer uses chemically pure cream of tartar, and hence the adulteration of other brands. The “Royal’’ is, accordingly, the only baking powder that will produce perfectly pure bread, biscuit, cake, pastry, etc.; and these articles are now pro- nounced more wholesome when raised by the Royal Baking Powder than when leavened by any other agent. It is particularly a question of health, therefore, what baking powder we shall use; and those who appreciate the miseries of dyspepsia and other ailments that follow the use of impure food will not hesitate to select the “Royal.” CITY ITEMS.
