THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: TUESDAY... June 26, 1988, CROSBY S, NOYES. Editor, ‘The Evening Star bas « regular, verwazent bona fide daily circulation more than trebie that of any ether daily paper published in Washington, and much greater thas that of ali the other dally papers bere added together. ‘Tum Stam of last Wednesday In discussing edt- Yorlally the favorable position of Harrison in the Chicago convention, the sentiment for him in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and the pros- pect that be would run well in the race for the ‘Bomination, also referred to the drawbacks to bis ‘candidacy, the opposition of the Pacific coast, and the fear that through jealousies aroused by the convention he might lose some Gresham votes in ‘his own state. It does not appear, however, that here is any ground to expect the slightest Joss of republican votes by him in Indiana, ‘and running with Porter as candidate for governor, and in view of the fact that the democrats passed over Indiana in selecting their candidate for the ‘vVice-presidency, Harrison 1s expected by the re- publicans to carry bis state. The democrats ‘Still confidently rely upon Harrison's Chinese Tecord to weaken him on the Pacific slope, and they have on their side tne ante-nomination declaration of Delegate De Young that he could not carry California, The California republicans explain, however, that Harrison's objection ’o the anti-Chinese pill was on constitu. tonal grounds, that since 1882 he has been and is now all right on the question, and that Callfornia will imitate Oregon on the issue of protection. The break of the California delega- Uon to Harrison was the first unmistakable indi- €ation that he would be nominated. On the ‘Whole the republican selection of its candidate ts sensible one, and aclose and desperately con- tested Mght may be expected. Under the circum- stances New York's demand of the second place could not be resisted, though many shrewd politi. ¢al observers believe that the nomination of Phelps would have brought the ticket more votes in the electoral college. —————————— ‘What will the mugwumps do? The republicans invite them with ctvilservice reform promises which have been pronounced satisfactory, and a candidate not displeasing to them, from a state in Which the democrats are, notoriously, not civil- service reformers. The democrats make no civil- service reform promises, and their candidate 1s criticised as a disappointment in the role of a re- former. Nevertheiess the mugwumps will prob- ably vote for Cleveland and Thurman, not that they love civil-service reform less, but tari re- form more. 9 Representative Hemphill made a determined and successful fight yesterday to save District day. There isa wide difference in the degree of congressional consideration which the capitai secures between the effect of a perfunctory and half-hearted appeal by the District committee, ‘and a boid demand of the District day as a matter Of right and justice. This fact 1s appreciated in Washington, and the city renews to Chairman ‘Hemphill the assurances of Its distinguished consid- eration, — ~<a oe —____ In reporting the Chicago convention Tae Star has given to the people of Washington the fullest and best spectal correspondence, and by means of its extra editions has furnished them the frst in- formation of the presidential nomination, of the Vote by states on the decisive ballot, and of the Vice-presidential nomination and its details, ———— Under the circumstances, Mr. Lincoin’s trip abroad appears like a neediess outlay of time and Money; Dut no one can tell what might have bap- pened If the convention had been reduced toa choice between the son of bis father and the sgrandson of his grandfather. $a Dakota, whose claims to statehood were cham- Ploned so vigorously by Senator Harrison, gave Lim ber ten votes in convention wita enthusiasm, and would duubtiess be delighted if she had some €iectoral votes to cast in the same way. neo If the inside history of the republican conven- tion of 1880 is ever written, it will be found that Mr. Morton narrowly escaped at that time the honor Which has come to him eight years later. $$ -———_—— When Harrison sees the awful portraits that Some of the papers are printing, with bis name attached, he will almost wish some other fellow had drawn the first prize in the Chicago lottery. a Mr. Elkins has weakened his claims upon the consideration of Mr. Cleveland by a full explana- ton of his Chicago program and by laboring at the last to nominate Gen. Harrison. With Benjamin at one end of their ticket and ‘Levi at the other, the republicans ought to get out & large share of the Hebrew vote in November. ‘The debate in the House yesterday indicates ‘that a part of the District legislature needs infor- ‘mation concerning District laws. It was rather a tasteless sop which the conven- tion threw at the eleventh hour to the probibi- Uonists, ih Qed Seen Es BOYS’ AND CHILDREN’S CLOTHING.
