The Entertaining Briton, THE COMPARATIVE MEKITS OF ENGLISH AND AMERI- CAN MEN. From the Arxonaut. ‘The popularity of young Englishmen in New York soctety remains unabates. ‘The young Englishmen in New York offer a va- riety of types. Some of them, especially those of a lower class at home, come like conquering heroes. They grumble at everything American, they com- piain With bitterness “of tue “trains” and the cli- mate, the lack of good manners among the women, the ridiculous dressing of men, the shoddism, the absence of oid families, and in’ their sleeves liugh complacently at the people Who are running about like mad dogs and straining every nerve to have them at dinner and dance. Not a tew of these men are adv who gull New Yorker with Lease.” “My cousin, Robert. —; my elder brother, who married daughter of Lord —,” a man not tn the swim, can have no idea what'a few such sentences, com: with a gentlemanly appearance, a chilly manner, a good supply of clothes and cheek, can wy ueré in New York auhony people who are heuher dense nor inexpereuced. ‘The Newark us lord Was an exaggerated type of this class, and so long as Americans lay themselves open wo this sort of Uking they Will be fooled and then Jerred at by the great fainily of bosus lorus who make America thelr happy hunung grounds. It is rather surprising that so wany' bitter expert- ences have not taught our countrymen to be a little more judicious. But people who learn slowly generally learn thoroughly. ‘The better class of Englishmen who infest New York are generally Very nice teilows, Who stand their spoliing well, Excepting such men as the Duke of Marlborough, whuse reception here was something to forget as svon as possible, they are generally talkative, unaffected, jouly fellows, with tong .eys, Ite brains, and mahbers either quieuly dignified or boyisbiy ihgenuous. They are better- looking than our men and better-tempered. They are wuch more ignorant of our country than we of theirs, They all tink Uo live on a ranch must be the stinple ir bliss, and that bears, buffules, “mountain lous, antelopes, and” prairie "hens circie before the door of the rancher’s cabin, While he sits languidiy in the doorway ening Off the particu.arly plump young ones with is rite. Their ignoraace In business matters 1s something unbelievable. Tuey aré prey for the commonest swindler; but once they get swindied— as they always do ib the first year—tuey become absurdly suspicious of every one, and begin to rd the honest man as Diogenes and Hamlet did. They are the most phlegmatic meu on eaith in thelr loves, the most obstinate tn their hates, Their ideal Is to be country gentlemen on large estates In Eagland, and they hate une lite of large cities. Coud there be a man more opposed, at every point, to the average American? nid thls {8 one Of the secrets of their popularity over here. We like a change and they area cuange. ‘The other secret of their popularity Isthat socially they are as superior to our men as our Women are socia.ly superior to their Women, And IU 1s socially that they are so much in d-mand, American men, as a class, do hot shine in society. “The reasou for which 1s Very simple—they have ho tine to learn tobe enteruilning. It 1s next to impossible for a man Who has been hard at Work in office all day tosit down tn the evening and entertain, with airy persiflage, some raw girl fresh from college or some gay inarried Woman fuil of airs and graces and housense. He 1s Uired out, he Is preoccupied, and he will remain so until he does not “have to spend bis entire day 1 the office. How can he entertain when he never reads anything but what can better him from a business potut of view, when all bis brains and energies are concentrated on the proviem he has undertaken to solve? He may be, a8 faF aS Conversation goes, a mute, ine glorious Diderot, an undeveloped Sydney Smith; all that possible brilancy has been focused on MS business, at which he probably Is a geaius. He 1s Uke very successful literary people, who are notoriously the dullest people 1n the world to con- Verse with. And why? Because all their bright— est and most original thoughts are greedily gar- nered up Lo the minutest dropped seed, and are put into their next book, Wheuce they dazzle the world, Not so the young, itinerant Engushinan, He 13 one of the leisure Class and has no business. He has gone Uurough college and now bis work in life 4s to deck a crack regiment and be charming.
