THRE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, The Colored Trustees Have a Little Disagreement, CHANGES AMONG TEACHERY—NEW TEXT BOOKS TO ‘BE INTRODUCED—THE OLD NAME OF THE HIGH SCHOOL TO BE RETAINED—NORMAL SCHOOL GRAD- CATES, ETC. A disagreement between the trustees of the colored schools, Dr. Francis and Mr. Cornish, came to the surface at the meeting of the school board last nighg. Dr. Francis ‘asked for information about the Proposed manual training exhibition of the col- ored schools. He said he had been told that some- thing of the kind was to take place, though be had not been consulted about it, and he did not know that the board had authorized it. Mr. Cornish said it had been customary to have exhibitions in the scbools at the close of the year, and this one had been arranged without expense. He Rad consulted the Superintendent of colored Schools about it, and both supervising principals and they had given hearty assent to it He thought jt Was 4 good thing to gather together the results of the manual training work, apd it did not occur to him that action by the board was necessary. nab, fants sald, that now that the exhibition ma for he would not oppose ite had becn consulted at frst he would have objected strongly, a® being inadvi Ume. Manual training instruction had been Selng On in the colored schools for only three Months ‘The coming exhibition would, he was sure, De a creditable one, but it was being made I. ee Sacrifice of all other work. os — School was already practically closed so far other work was conerned. and this industrial Work Was being pushed forward so as to accom- plish in a few weeks the work of months. Mr. Cornish denied this statement of facts. He complained that tbe trouble was a lack of har- mony in the colored schools, und expressed regret at the state of affairs. Dr. Francis protested against one member of the board acting independently of the board. APPLICATIONS AND RESIGNATIONS. The committee on High and Normal school, to ‘Whom was referred the petition of many pupils re- questing that the name of the Washington Hig School changed to the Paul High School, in honor of the late lamented principal, reported ‘back the petition without the committee's recom- mendation. The report sald: “The committee ‘sympathize cordially with the peUtioners io their estimate of the great value of Mr. Pau’s services and of his general worth, and it will at any time unhesitatingly recommend any action intended to appropriately do permanent honor to bis memory and not involving results or tendencies prejudicial tO the Dest interests of the schools. The committee are of opinion, however, that the nomenclature of our school buildings should be permanent, except In cases in Which cogent reasons for a change may intervene, and especially that the name under Which the High School has gained tn the short pe- riod of twelve years its enviable national distinc- Uon, and in which it has issued diplomas to so many hundreds of graduates, whose careers of ‘useiulness in this other communities are daily honoring lis existence, should be preserved.” ‘The Teport Was adopted.
