The victim was Charles Parker, colored, aged twenty years. He was killed by Moses Brent, a colored man, about the same age. Parker and Brent were cart drivers, and both, it ts statad, were courting Sadie Adams, a colored girl, living on 17th street east. Parker was the favored one, and Brent's Jealousy, it 1s stated, has recently Deen expressed in threats against Parker. Satur- day night, about 9 o'clock, the two men met and had a fignt tn front of Skelly’s saloon, 14th and A Streets southeast. Brent struck Parker on the Dack of the head With a stone, knocking him down, In the morning Parker was found lying in a stable died yesterday afternoon. Brent made his escape. ‘BRENT GIVES HIMSELF UP—HIS STATEMENT. This morning Brent, the alleged murderer, en- tered the sixth precinct station, wnere Lieut. Kelly was in charge. “Is you got a warrant for Mose Brent?” asked the negro. “Yes, sir,” answered Lieut, Kelly. “Are you Mose Brent?” “118,” he answered . “You are the man we are looking for,” said the Meutenant, Brent gave his age as nineteen years. He sald that he came her3 Prince "3 County, Md., about six years and has deen en- faged driving a cart. ‘He said that he had been ‘eeping company with Sadie Adams for about six months. Parker, he said, left the Navy at New- port some months ago and returned home about Christmas, Brent said that he had never been in- Umate with the deceased. Saturday night, he said, Pai came along and calied him aside. While they were talking Parker said that he would mash his (Brent's) head off, but before be could do it he struck Parker with the stone which he beld in his hand, aad after knocking Parker down he struck him ‘again. He said that yesterday afternoon When two East Washington policemen were searching his house he was standing across the ‘street looking at them. Later this morning he Was taken by Detectives Raff and Horne toa gal- lery and pt aphed. He said that it was the first time he had ever had his picture taken, and ‘the officers promised vo give him one of them. THE INQUEST. At 11o’clock to-day Coroner Patterson began an Inquest in a little frame house on South Carolina avenue, near 14th street southeast. The house is occupied oy an undertaker, and the body of Par- ker Was laid out in the little shop attached to the house. Colored people gathered from all over the commons aad crow; about the house while the inquest was in progress, blockading the entrances and leaning over the silis of the open windows, ‘Tne jurors were Josiah L. Venable, Wm. T. Bright, Wm. H. Keil, John P. Connell, Chas. C. ‘Herbert and Josepn J. Wood. There were but three wit- nesses present when the inquest began, the police reporting that they were unable to find many, as they thought they were purposely keeping away. Breot Was vrougut over trom the sixtn precioct station-house, and sat handcuffed in room with the jury while the witnesses were examined, ‘Mr. Jos, Shillington, his counsel, was also present. ‘THE PIRST WITNESS BXAMINED was Charles West, a young colored man, He was present, he said, when Parker was struck. There was some “fussing” first. Brent called Parker a s——— and Parker sald “you're another one.” Then Parker turned his head one side and Brent siruck him with a stone. Parker was knocked down and Brent jumped upon him. He held a stone in his hand and continued to strike Parker with it after the latter was down. Brent ‘then rose. Witness said “Let's take him up.” Ed. Gotug, Who was pyesent, replied, “Let bim alo don’t get into Scrape.” So the witness an others went away. Witness saw Parker get up and ran away. He run a distance, fell, got up again and ran. Witness did not Kuow how he got to the place where he was found in the morning. OTHER TESTIMONY. George Thomas, colored, testitied to being pres- ent when the blows were passed, though he was not present when the trouble began. It was on A ‘street, between 14th and 15th streets southeast. Parker and Brent were quarreling when he ar- rived. A man named Henry Lomax came up and ‘old them to stop their nolse in tae street before the police came. They did not stop, but went on untii Brent called Parker a s——- —, ana Parker retorted, “You're another one.” Parker, when he said that, turned his bead to walk away, and Brent struck him with sometl he bad in his hand, knocking him down the ‘Then Brent Jumped upon Parker and beat him over the head. Witness then saw Parker get up and Tu across the street, and run up the bill or bank. ‘There he fell and rolied all tue way down the bank, about three feet in height. Witness then left and saw no more of Parker. He did not hear — Ubreaten or see him attempt to strike rent. Priscilla Williams, acolored girl, wearing a tight- Mitung winter coat of astrachan cloth, a calico apron and a broad-brimmed straw hat, and carry- ing a bunch of roses in her hand, was the next Witness. She said she met Brent last evening near 14th and A street. He nadon a siouch bat and overalls. Witness told him that they were after ‘him, and he sald he was going to take the cars, He ran then and went toward Benulngs’ bridge. ‘The = knew nothing of the occurrence of Satur- ay night. Laura Gardner, another colored girl, was the Bext Wituess. She was with Saale At the girl the trouble was about, Saturday night. They Were golng to market, and as they passed 14th and A streets met Parker and Breatthere. They went on some distance When It began to rain, and wit- hess turned to go back home. She met Brent and asked him if be bad been fighting. He sald, “Yes; I have knocked Caarley’s ——- — brains out, and if 1 catch Sadie I'li knock her — brains out.” Brent had been telling her all the week what he Was going to do to Charley. The brain beneath was compressed and coutused. There had been considerable hemorrh: He found also a small scalp wound in tue back of the head. The sealp back of the fracture was contused, and there Was a small abrasion on the lett Lip.
