With a few exceptions it has come to be understood that In maby if nut most of the states no man can be elected to the Senate unless he 1s a miilionaire, and generally connected with or the representative Of solue powerful corporation. | So, strong. is the feeling becoming on Unis subject that within the past few days I have heard several members ex. press the opinion that the me Was near at hana ‘when the only safety would He in the election of Senators by a popular you. The worst feature of the matter 1s that the ratl- road companies combine to bring their influence to bear on Senators In favor of ay one of the com- panies that may have matters pending before Con- gress. I have reason to believe that many railroad companies In the West have been Induced by the Pennsyivunla corporation to write Lo Senators to use their influence to hetp It in 1ts efforts to retain possession of the Mall, and the Farwell bill—in short, anything It may choose to demand. How miucH intluence this nas had With Senators of course no one can say; but it would seem to go a loug way toward explaining the Wonderful power which that company seems to exercise in the Sen- ate. It was the same way when they got possession of the Mall originally, and which Senator Morrill strugyled so earnestly to prevent, Dut in vaiu. You remember how, after having of- fered amendment after amendment, each being defeated by a vote of about 24 to 18, he said in despair: “Mr. President, I had intended to offer all these amendments (holding up a large bundle of papers), but I see it Is useless, and Iwill forbear. T know the gentleman ts awaltlbg your decision in the hail outside with great ttmpatience.” Andafter the deed Was done he most appropriately moved that a commituee be appointed to wait on Hon, ‘Thomas Scott, to see what further orders he had for the U.S. Senate, though Ubat did not get into the record. ‘This week will ably determine whether now, as before, the Fennsylvania Rallroad Company controls the United States Senate, and the votes will be scanned tn other sections of the country, as well as in this downtrodden District. ‘A Tax-PavER. ae Rossexizs Reroxtep.—Rachael Herring, No. 21 K street northwest, reports that her house was entered yesterday morning and robbed of a gold Wateh sind cuaia.—T.
