To the Editor of Tur Evexrxo Star: Occasionally, during the past three or four years, articles have appeared in various newspapers pur- Porting to show what became of the Con- federate States seal after the collapse of the Con- federate government; but as none of them that I have seen have been correct, I have, at the request of a number of friends, concluded to give a correct ‘Statement of what became of that as well as short nlstory of the same. At the fall of Kichmond Col. Jno. T. Pickett, who Was in command of the rear guard of the Confederate forces, left there to cover the retreat of the army, and the officers of the government went into the office of the secretary of state to see if there was anything left there that might prove of any interest. In searching throt @ pile of old papers and rubbish on the floor found the Confederate States seal, which he put in bis pocket. At the close of the war Col. Pickett left the country and went to México, taking the seal with him, where he remained for several On his return to this country, in 1872, Col. Pickett settied in this city, where I became acquainted with and Jearned that Le had in bis possession the Confed- erate states’ seal, which he showed me twoor Ubree Umes. Shortly alter settling here, Col Pickett conceived the idea of having /ac similes of the seal made, intending to sell the same and dis- tribute the proceeds of ‘Sales among the widows and orphans of Confederate soldiers. He hud a umber of Lhose fac similes mi one of which he presented to me, and which I still have in my pos- session, Whether any of these fac similes, and if any, how many, were ever soid I do not know, nor doTknow what became of the original, as I lett Unis city in a short Wuile after and have never seen Col, Pickett since. Very little is known as to tne history of the seal, but the following 1s a short synopsis of what little 1s known: At the tnird session of the first congress of the Confederate states, heid in 1863, a “jolt resolution to establish @ seal for the Confederate states” was adopted. Said “seal to consist of an equestrian portrait of Washington (after the statue which surmounts bis monument in the capitol square in Richmond) sur- rounded With a Wreath composed of the principal agricultural products of the Confederacy (cotton, Wbacco, sugarcane, corn, Wheat and rice), and having around its m: in the words, “I'he Con- Tederate States of Al ica, Twenty-second Fep- Tuary, Etghicea Hundred and Sixty-two,’ with the following device, ‘Deo vindice. Accordingly, on May 20, 1863, Judah P. Benja- ‘Min, secretary of stale of tue Confederate states, Sent a dispatch to James M. Mason, commissioner of the Confederate states, near the government of Great Britain, giving him a full description.of the design for a’ seal a3 adopted by Congress, and directing him to have the same made. Iu this dis- patch Mr. Benjamin says: “It 1s not desired that ‘the work be executed by any but the vest artist that can be found, and the difference of expense between @ poor and a fine specimen of art in the engraving ts too small a matter to be taken into cousideration in a work that we tondiy hope Will Le required for generations yet unborn.” Mr. Mason placed the matter in the hands of Mr. Foley, who employed Mr. Joseph S. Wyons, chief engraver of her majest seals, lo execuve the work. In a@ levter to Mr. Benjamin, dated London, February 18, 1864, Mr. Mason say! “Mr. Foley itiorms me that Mr, Wyous says that it Will yet require six Weeks or Lwo months to com- plete the seal, as he Is very anxious to bestow ‘upon 1t all the’ pains soimportant a work demands. je 13 executing it in siiver (the metal the state ‘seals of England are executed in), Which offers the AdVablage Of proof aguinst rust so often destruc- Uve to seals executed iu steel.” ‘On the 6th of July, 1864, Mr. Mason writes Mr. Benjamin: “1 have the pleasure to inform you that i send by Lieut. Chapman, C. 5. A., the seal of the Confederate states, at last completed. It is much admired by all who have seen it here, and I uope You Will approve it as a Due work of art.” The seal, Which Was pure silver and weighed four or ve’ pounds with the waiers and other nec- essaries, cost the Confederate siates government £122 105., equal to about $700 United States cur- rency. It arrived in Richmond but @ short while before Chat city fell, so that but few impressions were ever made from it. ‘This ts avout all Ual is known of the Confeder- ate states seal, or of its history, and 1s sent vo you for Uhe purpose of settilng the question of What Decame of st, as Well as to give thoye who feel an interest in the matter wnat litte 13 known of its history.
