A NEW MACHINE WHICH BIDS PAIR TO BANISH THE FEN FROM USE EST/KELY—THE WONDERFUL IX- VENTION OF A WASL!NGTON MAN—THE DEPRCTS OP THR COMMON TYPE-WKITRE OVERCOME BY AN ENTIRELY NEW MACHINE. The type-writer has’ aiready made the pen old- fashioned. The pen may still hold sway over the little private writing done at home, and be en- trusted with the confidences of my Iady’s diary and the tender secrets of scented billets-doux, but in the counting-room or office, where dispatch and legibility are important considerations, the type- Writer is supreme, Notwithstanding the general adoption of this method of recording the business of the world, and notwithstanding the fact that ‘30,000 type-writers are sold yearly, no important improvements have been made on the type-writer= in use since the day the rattling of the keyboards first began to be heard in offices. ‘The type-writer purchased to-day Is essentially the same as one Purchased a dozen years ago. The skill of in- Yentors applied to the old machines seems to have been of no avali in overcoming de- fects which every operator soon discovers, Soon, however, there will be placed on the mar- ket anew typewriter, which, It 1s claimed, will not only do better work than the old, but ‘doit more rapidly, more surely, with less labor on the Part of the’ operator, and compared with the clatter and rattle of the old typewriters, without any noise, This typewriter cannot be spoken of a8 an Improvement; it 1s in all particulars an en- rely new machine, an original tnvention, even in its very first principles, similar to the old only because it has a key board in front and a carriage for the paper behind. The inventor of the new machine said with pardonable pride, as he ex- hibited it to THe STAR reporter, that bis machine ‘Was the first real typewriter that has been pro- duced. It ts known as The Capital Typewriting Machine, Its inventor is Mr. C. T. Moore, of this city. He has his machine in use In his office in the Kellogg Building, where he explained its operations and mechanism to a Stak reporter, Speaking of Its possibilities, he sald that it would extend the use of type-writing machines into en- Urely new flelds. He operated it to show the ease with which it accomplished its work, and the per- fect character of the work when done. Sentences, were printed rapidly on a sheet of common soft paper, Were spaced and adjusted as nicely as in the best Book printing, and sere was no blur or sign of unevenness in the distribution of ink. All unis | Was brought about by tngenious mechanism, pro- | viding, automatically, for te spacing and for the aistribution of ink. One of the main features of the nachtine 1s the “variable spacer” or “feeder.” Tne letters of the alphabet take up spaces of varying widths, the letter or sw" requiring more’ room than or “L" The ordinary type-writer provides | the same amount of space for all, so that some let- | ters appear crowded, while others seem to have too | much room. ‘The “variable feeder” so operates Usat each letter makes room for itself. In other ‘words the paper carriage 1s moved far enough to furnish space for printing the required letter. This symmetrical spacing, precision of work, clear im- pression, and the even distribution of thé ink com- iné to make a line that pleases the eye, and sug- gests a hundred type-writer may possible "uses to which the new applied. The types are at- tached to the periphery’ of small wheel, which lies lat upon the upper part of the case contain- ing the mechanism. Depress a key and the wheel Turns until the face of the letter depressed comes opposite the point on the paper where It 1s to be printed, and thats done by depressing the next letter 1h the word; that is tosay, the operation of | depressing a key’ represents the triple opera. Uon of printing and releasing one letter and Setting Up Of” another. Several advantages are thus gained. To the casual observer the advantage that Will be most apparent 1s the safe- guard it affords against mistakes. It the operator strikes the wrong key he can remedy the error be- fore printing aud without disfiguring the sheet by depressing the correction button, which operation places the machine in the position it was betore the wrong letter was depressed. Another tmpor- tant advantage of this arrangement 18 that it in- creases Uke rapidity with which the printing may be done. If the machine Were so constructed that Uae pressure of a key “set-up” the letter and also printed it, the operator would have to keep hls finger on a key during the whole operation. AS itis, the type-wheel revolves trom lettter to letter, while the operator's hand 1s mov- ing from one key to another, thus utl- wing Ume that would otherwise be lost. | ‘The machine has, toe, a most ingenious automatic ink fountain with a Combination of Uny inking and distributing rollers that keep an even supply of ink on the face of the type. Any kind of ink, liquid or hard printing inks, can be used. ‘Type= A FRACTURED SKULL. ‘A Sunday Bace-Ball Party on the Vir- sinin Side. HOW A PARTY OF YOUNG MEN AMUSED THEMSELVES AND ANNOYED 4 RAILROAD MAN—THE RESULTS SERIOUS TO ONE OF THE PARTY. Last Sunday morning ® party of young men drove to Fouf-Mile-Run, where they intended, they said, to spend the day playing base ball. ‘They ‘ook with them several musical instruments, a keg of beer, and several bottles of some highly-colored liquid. Arriving at the Run, they selected a pretty spot near the raflroad track, to which they drove their wagon, and the horse was tied near a patch of green grass, where he could also spend a pleas- ant time. The young men engaged in a game of base ball, played on the banjo and guitar, and in- duiged in considerable beer drinking. Toward the afternoon some of them began to fee? the effects ‘of what they had drank, and became boisterous. Stone throwing was indulged in, and Thomas Taylor, an employe of the railroad, who has charge of the track and at that signal point, remonstrated with them Near the Station there is but a sing! passesunder the large arch, We been any trouble with the signals a serious accident might have occurred. Taylor was afraid that the stone-throwing might result 1n some such accident, Several times he spoke to the younj men, but they pald no atiention to. hin, and finally one of them succeeded in breaking the traln-sigi ‘again spoke to them, and wen! with his ladder to arrange the signal which had deen struck by a stone and t ‘AS he ascended ‘the ladder one of the Washington party picked up astone, which he wasabout to throw, when he ‘was struck and knocked down by a ‘bystander. Taylor tnen came down from the signal and had some warm words With one of the party named John Berens, who was struck by Taylor and Knocked down. In falling his ‘head _ struck the car-track and was cut. He re- turned home on a train. Monday he went out driving, and when he returned in the after- noon he was taken ill, Dr. Taylor was called to ‘see him, and 7 examination found that the young than’s skull was probably fractured. He grew worse from that time, and this morning it Was thought that he could not recover. He lives on 7th street, between nd M streets northwest. ‘THE SERIAL SAVINGS AND BUILDING ASSOCIATION. ‘The tenth annual meeting and the commencement of the new twenty-first issue of stock of the “Seral” was held last evening at its hail, No. 615 ‘7th Street northwest. It Is rathe curious that in this piece of mechanism, repre- | senting one of the advanced points of inodern in- Vention, an appliance is used to secure the im: | pression similar to the oneemployed in the Ben | Franklin printing press, now in the National | ‘Museum. ‘The device 1s a Small arm with a toggle- Joint that deftly and gently presses the paper at | the required point against the face of the type. | When the printing is done, even on soft paper, there is no perceptible Identation of the paper. | When a line has been printed trom end to end, the paper-carriage, as in other typewriters, | has'to be moved back twine starting place again: ‘This ts doue swiftly and easily vy pulling a handy lever at one side of the machine. ‘The same move- ment Winds a spring ina drum, and thus stores power sufficient to print the next line.
