The | nation may for; men, and thougd it had not so turned out in the War, It appears that they have not givea up the idea, He Uaen spoke of the solid South menacing oi and asserting their determination not to allow the election of a republican President. The , Dut tue colored peopie are bound to remember the past, and When (ue rights of every man Were respected there would be time to forget What had been done. They were met With the assertions in the papers that the negro 1s falling into a state of barbarism. He was com- pelled to admit that the negro isin some respects worse off than When he Was a slave. Though nominaily free he is to-night a slave. Not fromm is fault, but because of his accusers. We were not emancipated. Abrahatm Lincoln meant well, Dut the nation Is one of hypocracy. The negro NEVER WILL BE FREE unless he goes to the polls untrammeiled. The colored men are now betng cheated through the trucking system out of their wages, and the high- est paid in the South fs $8 per month, They should ittt tiseir united ¥ J 1 fraud. Tue please and they can’t go else- ‘The only protection he had was the con- science Of the ‘storexeeper—a conscience which Sold men to bulld churches, women to support missionaries, and babies to buy Bibles. (Laughter and appa The scrip has no value tn the fu- ware. How can ft be otherwise than that the race is retrograding. ‘The Nortuern people do not be- leve ityaud when we ‘ell them they wiil cry “vloody shirt.” He hoped some young men would go out like the early abolitiontsts and tell it to the people, Another feature was that It led to crime. Every Northern man visiting the old slave-holders, 18 told that they would not have slavery back. ‘Why? | When they owned slaves they had the re- sponstbility of tuem, but row they have the labor without tLe respousibility. He called on the press to give these statements. “He might be shot, but he Would expose it. In Engiand, where so much 48 said as to the workinginen, 1 fs a crime to pay rge the what they pi other than money. Here, however, scrip was paid. At Weldon, where the cars stopped for meals, and he COULD NOT GET 4 MEAL, he had made au address to the colored people at the depot urging them to vote for no man in fayorof scrip. He then read from the landlord and tenant acts of Mississippi and other states, and said they were a disgrace to civilization; the tenant being entirely at the mercy of tne land- owner. The condition of tue Irish tenant 1s Just in comparison with the American negro. He sum- maried that the full grown man received $8, and Unis was reduced by the truck system; that be never handles adoilar; he cannot leave for his sertp dow’t pass on the railroads, and he has to Work for his old masier, chained’ to hls locality. In view of all this, now can he rise higher. Shame ‘on those who point to the negro in his when they are the cause of his ‘condition. He'ts the only one at work, the land-owner being at the eross-roads Whiting, astride of a rum barrel. ‘The government Which” should protect the ‘weak ¥ protects the strong. If Grover Cleveland Was tolustst that the fourteenth and tifteenta atmeadwents should be enforced tue constitu- Uonal right could be found. if they had the rignt to muke tne negro a citizen, they had the right to hun. He was a repubucan, but a cored THE REPUBLICAN PARTY must not only be up to the Umes, but make the Umes, and fi it could not guarantee protection it fails tm its duty. If it fails we wili leave it. The question Will soon be decided at Chicago, and if tt Chose, a candidate with back Lone and clan hands it would Win. He naimed some possibie candidates. The name of Blaine evoked no applause, but taat of Sherman Was received with shouts, There was one not mentioned wuo, Mr. Douylass sald, he would love to see In ule White House, Justice Harlap, of the supreme Court, wuo alone stood by the fourteeath and fifteents amendments, and could be depended upon. However, “The Corsair” 1s a bur- lesque, and from ume immemorial burlesquers have been allowed exceptional license on the stage, and “gags” which would be tolerated no- where else are rather expected in this sort of entertainment, Beside being a chaotic jumble of all sorts of jokes, “The Corsair” 1s one of ‘the most gorgeous spectacles ever seen here, ‘he departure Scene and the pirates’ craft in the frst act, the pirates’ headquarters in the second and the harem sceneim the third were marvels of richness and beauty. ‘The grand march and the prismatic fountain in the second act_ were highly effective in thelr brilliant and ever-changing colors, The score of “The Corsair” contain’ many pleasin; numbers, which were well rendered last night by the principals, some very credit- able vocal work bei done by Miss Annie Summerville, Miss Mont ‘Mr. Brocolini, aud Mr. Frahk David, who sings well for a come- dian.
